I have heard something about you should buy babies clothes off SHEIN I think it's something to do with lead? Does anyone know why I shouldn't buy from SHEIN and what harm it causes please. I really like cute little different outfits that I just can't find anywhere else I'm tempted to buy I just have this thought at the back of my mind I just can't remember what was said

They’re a fucking hideous company, for one. Using literal slave labour and giving zero shits about their contribution to climate change and littering the planet with their fast fashion.

I’d walk around naked before supporting them.

(Have a watch of Buy More on Netflix. If the sight of far flung beaches and oceans covered in tons and tons of our discarded clothing doesn’t make you want to do things differently, nothing will.)

Think about the planet you want your child to be part of rather than “cute little outfits”. They aren’t a Barbie doll.

If you must, there are loads of “cute little outfits” in Charity and second hand shops with plenty of life left in them.

I’m never sure they aren’t using sprays, dyes and chemicals in manufacturing processes that are banned here and could be harmful. Plus, do you really not mind dressing your baby in clothes made by forced/slave labour?

mummyh2016 · 05/12/2024 12:20

OP I can't answer your question however you won't get an answer on here, you'll just get lectured about slave labour.
I haven't put a baby in Shein stuff btw however pretty sure I had a couple of toddler things from them.

KnickerlessParsons · 05/12/2024 12:20

Chemical tat produced by children and low paid workers. Some of it may not be, but most has to be in order for Shein to be able to sell stuff at the prices it does, AND export it to its customers.

It doesn’t have to comply with any of our or the EU’s safety regulations, as its manufactured abroad, which is why it can be so cheap.

In independent studies, clothing from there has been found to have high levels of lead and other chemicals which it’s not a good idea to expose yourself; let alone children; too.

They do have some adorable clothes, but it’s not worth it, even taking aside the massive slavery/ethical/sustainability angles.

Hazardous chemicals have been found in some of their clothes and some of their baby/children's wear doesn't meet flammability standards in the UK and are potentially quite dangerous.

I wouldn't buy baby clothing or toys from Shein/Temu etc because clothing might not meet the same safety standards that are expected of clothing retailers from the EU / UK. Unfortunately in China, there have been too many cases of manufacturers putting profits before safety (have a look into the baby milk tragedies in China).

I would only buy baby and children's clothing/toys from shops in the UK that I know meet rigorous safety standards.

smallsilvercloud · 05/12/2024 12:47

I wouldn't choose for a baby, the materials will be cheap polyester and not breathable fabric, best to cloth baby in as natural fabric as possible.

Truly enlightening post. I’m sure Tim Berners-Lee is thrilled that the internet has evolved so far in so little time!
