Thread 52 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Autumn 24 - Start of Uni Yr 3

Oblomov24 · 31/08/2024 10:42

2024 Autumn, start of year 3 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

51 Previous thread - 51.

Have you not been having gallbladder attacks? My god they were awful. I only had two (but each 8 hours of absolute screaming agony) - if they hadn’t taken it out I would have dug it out myself with a spoon. No problems since, haven’t missed it at all really.

cariadambyth · 14/09/2024 16:56

Gallbladder out here too. I was glad to have it removed and have had no problems since. Was never amused by the old adage ‘fat, fair and forty’ though.
It’s lovely to hear of all our dc’s adventures and particularly those off on gap years. I always think they are incredibly brave, it’s a big step.
All ticking along fairly well here. DS has just started sixth form and DD will be heading back to Royal Holloway next weekend for her final year. It’s all rushing by and I have quite mixed emotions about it all.

craggyrat · 14/09/2024 17:08

@Piggywaspushed good luck with the op

Delphigirl · 14/09/2024 17:13

Welcome to the club @cariadambyth !
dd2 is all packed in one massive rucksack for her Peruvian/Bolivian adventure. Off to the airport tomorrow and that’s it until December. Travelling with a group which bans phones (‘’mindful travelling’ ) so will get a few emails when she finds an internet cafe but that’s it! Old school!

Piggywaspushed · 14/09/2024 17:14

Thanks all. Seems I'm in a bit of a club !

The consultant wasn't convinced my symptoms were all gallstone related but I guess we'll find out.

PhotoDad · 14/09/2024 18:20

Good luck @Piggywaspushed!

EwwSprouts · 14/09/2024 21:41

Good luck with surgery @Piggywaspushed

@Delphigirl What a trip! Is time to tell you my Dad used to go to Bolivia a bit and had a story of a plane turning around and blowing away the shack that was the airport? Fear not it was a long time ago and is probably brick now.

😱😱😱😱

I’ll join the no gallbladder club. Had it out in my late 30s. The relief of knowing I wouldn’t have any more attacks was phenomenal. The attacks were just horrendous. The first one made me miss DS’s birthday party, subsequent ones made me feel like I could be dying. That sounds dramatic but to be free of them is great.

@Piggywaspushed just be gentle with yourself afterwards, took me a couple of weeks for the pain to go. That said I do have a low pain threshold.

hope DD has a great adventure @Delphigirl

PhotoDad · 15/09/2024 04:17

Good luck to @Delphigirl DD!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 15/09/2024 07:31

@Piggywaspushed good luck with the op this week and for a speedy recovery. 💐

@Delphigirl hope your DD has an amazing trip and that you get at least a few messages so that you know all is good! DS has just started yr 12, he’s just one of the earliest birthdays in the school year. Did his driving theory test yesterday and missed it by 2 points, poor boy is mortified, I’ve had to remind him that it’s easy to sit it again in a few weeks! This might actually make him open the Highway Code now.. 😂

Delphigirl · 15/09/2024 08:01

Oh poor DS @JustHereWithMyPopcorn ! Mind you I think a few low-level misses at this stage is generally a good thing. Focuses tge mind. Thanks for all the well wishes everyone. Off to have the Last Breakfast sob 🤣

craggyrat · 15/09/2024 08:46

Hope your DD has an amazing trip @Delphigirl !

Seeline · 16/09/2024 10:01

@Piggywaspushed hope the op goes ok
@Delphigirl your DDs trip sounds amazing - no phone though 😲
@JustHereWithMyPopcorn DS passed his theory a couple of weeks back with the official 4 in 1 app - only looked at the week before, but a good couple of hours each day. Not a copy of the Highway code in sight!

Currently In Mallorca for a week - luckily the weather has improved since we first arrived!!

Seeline · 16/09/2024 10:02

The Med 😆

@Seeline that looks fabulous! My DS used the 4 in 1 app but it took him over a year and three attempts and a LOT of help from me to pass it, the hours we spent doing the tests together, at least I learned a bit too, some of the newer stuff, just hope he can get the actual test passed within the two years now, not holding my breath TBH. Hope yours can get through it soon @JustHereWithMyPopcorn , I think mine just struggles with his SENs.

Delphigirl · 16/09/2024 12:18

She’s done London Madrid Lima and now waiting for her plane to Cusco where her phone will be switched off and stored 😱

Delphigirl · 16/09/2024 12:18

Seeline the med looks choppy but gorgeous!

crazycrofter · 16/09/2024 15:27

Good luck to your dd2 @Delphigirl , that sounds amazing! Do you have an empty nest now?

Delphigirl · 16/09/2024 15:40

Yes @crazycrofter , apart from DH and some gently farting hounds 😢😢😢

Delphigirl · 16/09/2024 15:53

I thought I would let you all know what ds2 (about to turn 24, just recently started working post graduation, left wing, charity shop clad, doesn’t believe in consumerist societies, 6’4” beanpole) wants for his birthday, as it made me laugh.

“A blue coat, like they wear in Paris”.

We established that he means this:🤣🤣🤣

Delphigirl · 16/09/2024 15:55

… the worlds most conservative navy city coat 🤣🤣🤣🤣

OublietteBravo · 16/09/2024 15:56

We’re back home. With no children. Beautiful sunny drive back from the North East.

24newernames · 16/09/2024 16:06

Loving the Paris coat. For years the DC called one of my coats my 'London coat' because I bought it on a day out there!

The Med looks gorgeous, although not too inviting for a swim tbf.

ealingwestmum · 16/09/2024 17:09

The boy is not for turning. Until he gets a Paris coat 😂😂

i just LOVE young people ☺️
