Thread 52 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Autumn 24 - Start of Uni Yr 3

Oblomov24 · 31/08/2024 10:42

2024 Autumn, start of year 3 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Fingers crossed for ds @24newernames , that would be such a boost for him wouldn't it! Hope they're not giving him false hope..

craggyrat · 31/10/2024 10:47

Good luck with the job offer @24newernames

Glad your werk went well @PhotoDad

After last week's MOT dramas the part from Toyota wasn't guaranteed to come by next year! So we took the plunge a year earlier than we wanted and now have not quite new Kia Sportage . I really hate spending money on cars!

ealingwestmum · 31/10/2024 10:50

That sounds very positive @24newernames 🤞

Good to hear your trip went will @PhotoDad , eating great food is an excellent way to pay tribute to your dad

Shimy · 31/10/2024 10:55

Fingers crossed for you @24newernames I very much he gets it after getting this far and having the offer dangled a bit, the wait is hard 😬.

I'm so glad it all went well @PhotoDad sounds like you gave him befitting send off.

Delphigirl · 31/10/2024 11:37

I was thinking of you @PhotoDad . Sounds like a fitting send off 💕
@24newernames - that sounds super positive so I am sending offer-making vibes and keeping all digits crossed!
I LOVE new cars @craggyrat … was delighted to realise Dh’s lease is up in March so I can plan the next one. I am in total control of car decisions in our household as a bona fide petrol head and surreptitious buyer of car magazines. Anyway enjoy!

EternallyDelighted · 31/10/2024 13:57

@PhotoDad glad your trip went well, it sounds as though it was comforting and a good send-off for your dad.

@24newernames fingers crossed, I remember you saying last time how gutted he was not to get it.

@craggyrat I've had Toyotas for the last 25 years and have found them to be extremely reliable on the whole but when something does go wrong outside warranty its expensive and a PITA if the part has to come from Japan. We are planning to change DH's car next year and like @Delphigirl I am in charge of car choosing as DH couldn't be less interested but the likeness ends there as I am far from being a petrolhead and look for economy, reliability, big boots and nice colours.

NCTDN · 31/10/2024 14:27

Good luck @24newernames

@PhotoDad glad it was ok.

I love new cars too - but an a real concert to electric cars. Next week dh is changing hours and we're going to a two electric car household.

Had a lovely few days visiting DD in Austria - what an experience !

Oblomov24 · 31/10/2024 16:16

Craggy, enjoy, I love a new car. I've never had new new, just new to me, we upgrade our cars every 2-3 years, I'm told Dh the other day that I'm now ready for my Hyundai hybrid to be upgraded.

NCTDN · 01/11/2024 21:49

Can I pick your brains if you have sons? DS is turning 18 and we have absolutely no idea of gifts. It would be lovely to get something to keep but what?!
DD was easy because jewellery is always a good keepsake although we have no ideas about a 21st present for her

handmademitlove · 01/11/2024 22:18

@NCTDN A watch? Can always get one engraved.

NCTDN · 01/11/2024 22:28

He's really not bothered about a watch apart from a garmin type which will become outdated with technology at some point. This is currently no1 though !
