Thread 52 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Autumn 24 - Start of Uni Yr 3

Oblomov24 · 31/08/2024 10:42

2024 Autumn, start of year 3 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

That sounds really positive @Oblomov24 !

ealingwestmum · 25/10/2024 21:41

He really sounds like he’s getting the best of both worlds @Oblomov24 , good on him. And happy kids make happy parents ;)

EternallyDelighted · 25/10/2024 23:29

Lovely to hear that @Oblomov24

I will try and listen to that clip tomorrow @Comefromaway

Well, I spent two hours on hold on the phone today sorting something on DS's behalf. What a palava. Done now though. The fact that he took a foundation degree followed by the BSc conversion this year has caused all sorts of administrative hassle as they are treated as completely separate courses. Will have some more stuff to sort out with him over the weekend too.

Comefromaway · 25/10/2024 23:35

Sounds an administrative pain in the backside

AnneOfCleavage · 26/10/2024 09:41

Eek!! @EternallyDelighted. I'm going to have to badger DD to sort out her council tax exemption as the other housemates aren't bothered to sort it as no letter has come through. I'll have to do it with her otherwise it won't get done.

That's lovely to hear @Oblomov24

Great piece of music @Comefromaway. I especially love strings - went to a concert recently to hear Dvorak's cello concerto. Breathtaking! Did DS play the keyboard for that piece too?

crazycrofter · 26/10/2024 12:01

Amazingly, our prayers have been answered and dd has got away with just a £50 fine for her driving offence! Really can’t believe it as everywhere I looked suggested it would be at least 3 points and £100!

Comefromaway · 26/10/2024 12:02

What a relief.

Delphigirl · 26/10/2024 12:40

Phew!

EwwSprouts · 26/10/2024 14:02

@Oblomov24 Super update. Glad he's got a good social life going.

@crazycrofter Phew! Funny how the first thing she saw was a police car. Wonder if she wasn't the first to have fallen foul of the junction?

crazycrofter · 26/10/2024 16:04

I thought that as well @EwwSprouts ! And the traffic cones were placed in a very confusing way - almost as if it was a trap !?

EternallyDelighted · 26/10/2024 16:13

Oh I'm so pleased @crazycrofter I have kept thinking about her these last few days.

AnneOfCleavage · 26/10/2024 17:14

Phew indeed @crazycrofter That is fantastic news.

In other news I have just realised we get an extra hour's sleep tonight which has made me stupidly happy 😃

PhotoDad · 26/10/2024 18:39

Good news for @crazycrofter DD!

Lovely day here walking around a local reservoir with DD while DS was teaching a windsurfing course. She negotiated a week off with her (very lovely) tutors, as tomorrow we are flying to Jersey to inter my dad's ashes next to my mum's, and to have a little break which we all very much need. So the extra hour helps with our crack-of-dawn start in the morning!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/10/2024 20:21

Great news @crazycrofter !

@AnneOfCleavage the extra hour is just another hour of me lying in bed awake trying not to wake anyone else. I’m am so fed up with my lack of sleep. 😭

AnneOfCleavage · 26/10/2024 20:49

To be honest @JustHereWithMyPopcorn I bet I wake at stupid o'clock as I'm wont to do fairly regularly now meno is fully upon me.

Hope tomorrow is all you hope it to be @PhotoDad

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/10/2024 20:55

@PhotoDad I hope tomorrow goes smoothly and is not too hard on you all. 💐

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 26/10/2024 20:57

@AnneOfCleavage its standard for me now too, but then I spend the day utterly exhausted. At least on the weekend I can have an afternoon nana nap on the sofa.

24newernames · 26/10/2024 22:52

Phew @crazycrofter that was lucky!

Thinking of you tomorrow @PhotoDad We recently got DSis’s gravestone in place. It was very emotional but felt like she was properly laid to rest now. I hope you get the same feeling of peace.

EternallyDelighted · 26/10/2024 22:56

Best wishes for tomorrow @PhotoDad Flowers

crazycrofter · 26/10/2024 23:52

All the best for tomorrow @PhotoDad amd I hope you have a good break.

craggyrat · 27/10/2024 05:52

Hope everything goes okay @PhotoDad

Decorhate · 27/10/2024 07:14

Hi everyone. I’ve forgotten to check in for a while. @crazycrofter I’m glad your Dd didn’t get into too much trouble. Sounds like the sort of situation that would give you nightmares. I’m waiting for a letter after accidentally driving down a street that was for buses only, when picking up Ds from a train station in a nearby town when there was engineering work last weekend.

Ds is enjoying his placement but I worry that he will be a bit lonely now that his local friends have gone back to uni. He often has no one to go out with at weekends.

EwwSprouts · 27/10/2024 08:51

@PhotoDad Hope today goes as you would wish and there is lots of parent/grandparent reminiscing.

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn Have you tried magnesium spray. I don't need it but have a couple of friends who say it has been a revelation.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 27/10/2024 09:14

@EwwSprouts I haven’t tried the spray but have tried the tablets, didn’t make any difference sadly. I’ve tried so many things, none of which have really worked. I think it’s just an age thing.

Seeline · 27/10/2024 09:19

Great news @crazycrofter !

I sympathise @JustHereWithMyPopcorn , my sleep is appalling - sleep in 40-90 minute bursts and can't get back to sleep in between. I can't remember when I last slept a block if more than 4hrs. Whilst looking forward to the extra hour last night, DS was out with his mates and woke me clomping up the stairs in his DMs at 5.20, so that was me done for the night 😭
DD is coming home for reading week tomorrow. Really looking forward to seeing her. She thinks she's secured a house for next year, so will hear all about that!
