Thread 52 - Covid GCSE Cohort - Autumn 24 - Start of Uni Yr 3

Oblomov24 · 31/08/2024 10:42

2024 Autumn, start of year 3 for those at Uni.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

51 Previous thread - 51.

@AnneOfCleavage DS didn't have to do anything in Notts - the uni provide a list of students to the Council. In DD's house in Aberystywth there is a certificate from the Council pinned to a notice board with the four tenants names on. They didn't do anything so I assume the agency did. It was there when they moved in. DD has done nothing to confirm that this is all that is required.

AnneOfCleavage · 27/09/2024 12:43

Thanks @mummyinbeds that's reassuring. The uni did ask for DD's new year 2 housing address - I thought it was to do with teaching placements... it could have been of course.
Her uni house is not affiliated with her uni anymore (used to be) and is now a private tenancy so not sure if that makes a difference. It's 10mins from her campus so very much in her uni campus area. Guess she'll find out in due course.

Happy 21st to dd @ealingwestmum !

NCTDN · 27/09/2024 22:21

Great cake!
DD will be in Austria for her 21st. I'm going over in December so hoping to find a local bakery and order a cake then that they could deliver or she could collect on her birthday. She's found out that her flatmates birthday is the day before so I now don't feel as bad that she's out there for it.

EwwSprouts · 27/09/2024 22:46

@ealingwestmum Birthday wishes to your DD. The cake looks delicious.

PhotoDad · 28/09/2024 07:23

Happy birthday to @ealingwestmum DD! Enjoy the cake!

PhotoDad · 30/09/2024 21:39

DD has stayed put in her rented room in an HMO but she has new housemates, and their first House Meeting to divvy up chores went well. Randomly it includes a neighbour from first year halls! However the roof is leaking... the landlord's been good in the past, so fingers crossed.

I am just home from driving an hour there and an hour back with DS to collect the schoolbag which he left at the sailing club by accident this weekend. It included his laptop with all his notes and his UCAS stuff. Not how I had planned the evening to go, but he's a good lad and we all make occasional mistakes.

We seem to end up posting forgotten items to DD (it would be a 600 mile round trip to drop them off). I wonder if the Post Office are starting to get suspicious. What’s in the parcel? A shower head, a lemon zester and a pair of heels.

Cantonet · 01/10/2024 09:24

An interesting mix @OublietteBravo 😂
I did the 4 hour round trip to Loughborough yesterday to deliver ds's Amp, guitar & tennis racket. All the things that didn't fit into the car last week. I had to secretly bring back his turntable, as it's not working. I think it was accidentally placed on its side while we were unloading the car the other day. It was dh's special present to ds for passing his exams & he will be upset it's not working. Hence the secrecy...Will have to take it to be fixed today.

Cantonet · 01/10/2024 09:27

I hope your DD had a wonderful birthday @ealingwestmum 🎂

ealingwestmum · 01/10/2024 10:14

I am chuckling at all the back and forth runs for forgotten essentials. As I sit here making random Amazon purchases and concede to upgrading my hand luggage to hold to accommodate DD’s ‘stuff’…

Seeline · 01/10/2024 11:05

DD was home for the weekend for a friends 21st. She's already been back 3 weeks. It was lovely to see her, and I don't think she needed to pick up any forgotten items!
She seems to be enjoying the shared house. She knows all the other housemates, and is friendly with them, but they aren't close friends, which suits her as she really needs her downtime.
All these 21st's seem very strange as DD has only been 20 for a couple of months. Hope everyone is enjoying their birthdays.

crazycrofter · 01/10/2024 11:49

Dd was 21 in June, so one of the younger ones too. We were on holiday last week, dh and I got back this morning but dd and ds came home on Friday, so she could get to Notts for start of term and he could get to work.

She seems to be settled in and trying to get on top of things. But she accidentally booked tickets ages ago for Vance Joy in London so she’s going down tonight. Fortunately she has no lectures on Wednesday!

Ds has dashed off to Croatia on a last minute short break. He said he was going to hire a car which terrifies me but he’s not answering my messages so I don’t know if he has! I asked him to please check in every day to tell me he’s alive and he’s obediently done that - ‘am alive’ is the limit of his communications!

EwwSprouts · 01/10/2024 13:53

@crazycrofter The dry humour of our young men!

@OublietteBravo That is a selection box 😆

BlueMarigold · 01/10/2024 21:08

Hi, I have been away from this group for too long. I hope DCs are settling into their 3rd year well. DD1 is on her placement year and she she’s settling in ok. She is learning a lot.

I was wondering if anyone on this group knows anything about silverfish? My friend’s daughter has an infestation in her room and she’s scared. Is there anything she can do?

Piggywaspushed · 02/10/2024 05:46

I have also been away to long! Had my gallbladder out last weekend. First 48 hours recovery were horrific. The GA and I did not agree. Feeling a bit better now and got about a week more off work.

DS went back after this so I ahven't seen his house. DH thought his room was in an awful spot, almost in the kitchen . DS thought he had a room overlooking the garden but it isn't , it looks over the front and a busy road (Heeley for hose who know Selly!) but he seems OK. He doesn't think he will become friends with the new housemates but he says they all go about their own business. I think at they very least they aren't a bunch of rich, entitled bullies.

In otehr news, the ever hapless DS1 passed his driving test first time, much to everyone's amazement. Even this has been a saga with a succession of 4 driving instructors until he got one who didn't play silly buggers. Now he wants to buy a car.

Re silverfish . I even have them in my house in downstairs loo. They like damp spots. But you shouldn't have infestations. Nothing to be frightened of, though. Has she told agency/landlord? They should get pest control out. Could she get a dehumidifier set up?

craggyrat · 02/10/2024 06:43

@Piggywaspushed wishing you a speedy recovery- sounds as though its been awful. Well done to your DS1!
@BlueMarigold - nice to see you back.

PhotoDad · 02/10/2024 06:44

Hope you recover quickly, @Piggywaspushed, and congrats to DS1!

Dehumidifiers solve a variety of woes in our damp climate and are always a good investment.

BlueMarigold · 02/10/2024 07:09

@Piggywaspushed wishing you a speedy recovery. DD1 lived on Heely Road last year. It’s a good location but I wasn’t very impressed with the house. Her room only had a tiny window on the ceiling. Congratulations to your DS on passing his driving test!

@NCTDN DD1’s placement is for a small local ecological consultancy.

I will tell my friend to get her DD a dehumidifier. Thank you for the tips

EternallyDelighted · 02/10/2024 07:27

I don’t know much about silverfish but yes to dehumidifiers being all-round useful in older houses, we run one in the background from about now till April as we used to get mildew on outside walls behind furniture, it turns itself on and off as needed, although in weather like this I think it is probably just sucking in damp air from outside the house, it is noticeable how much faster the tank fills in wet weather. We are in a Victorian house.

Hope your recovery continues smoothly @Piggywaspushed and well done to DS1. My DS has on his to-do list to find a new instructor at uni, otherwise all his progress at home over the summer will slip back. I am going to get up there and take him out in my car whenever I can too.
