Thread 47- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer's running away from us!

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonLatte · 05/07/2023 19:38

...it will be Christmas before we know it.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Good luck to the GCSE parents and DCs.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/08/2023 09:01

Good luck to the GCSE DCs, hoping everyone sails through.

Monkey2001 · 24/08/2023 09:26

Hoping for happy GCSE news on here today!

handmademitlove · 24/08/2023 09:55

GCSE results finally looked at. 1 grade down on most subjects compared to mocks but hopefully enough to get through to sixth form. Heading to school soon so guess we'll find out then!

Will be interesting to know how school did as a whole - not sure if it is just the way he approached things or a wider picture.... School are usually pretty accurate in their mocks grades Vs actual grades.

Not sure how he is feeling - he tends to bluff his way through most things and tell people he doesn't really care but pretty sure he is disappointed. He has always said he just needs enough to get in to sixth form but I think he was hoping for more. As expected he has done really well in coursework based subjects compared to exam based.

NCTDN · 24/08/2023 11:40

DS is pleased with his GCSE results, especially computer science as that was the awful paper.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 24/08/2023 11:45

Well done to @handmademitlove and @NCTDN DCs. Hopefully the have done well enough to continue on with their chosen path.

PhotoDad · 24/08/2023 12:09

Very happy with DS' GCSE results, better than he had hoped and more than enough to continue. Also confirms his choice of A level subjects!

Seeline · 24/08/2023 12:52

Congratulations to those with GCSE results - onwards and upwards!!

stoneysongs · 24/08/2023 12:53

Congrats to the GCSE brigade, great work 👏👏👏

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/08/2023 13:05

Congratulations to handmademitlove, NCTDN and PhotoDad minis.
As long as they can progress to their next chosen stage, that’s the main thing.
I was slightly disappointed with a couple of DS’s results last year - one was an A level subject - but it soon fades as they progress to the next stage.

crazycrofter , those are decent results, given his half hearted efforts! He sounds like a bright lad who will do really well, once he decides it’s worth his effort.
Good luck for year 13 - I hope he steps it up.

My lovely Ukrainian flute student, year 10, did amazingly in her first set of GCSE papers (state schools in Wales take some on year 10, the rest in year 11).
She took unseen poetry in the November sitting, having arrived in the UK in September, and got a C.
She told me the school expected her, understandably, to fail, but she was disappointed, wanting an A.
This summer, she took a paper in each of the sciences, 2 history papers and another English lit paper, and got 4A and 2A’s (A in English lit!)
She achieved all that whilst having to attend Ukrainian school lessons online alongside her UK school lessons - her day starts at 6am and her online lessons finish at 8pm.

BlueMarigold · 24/08/2023 14:13

DD2 is very happy with her GCSE results and is able to continue at her school with her chosen subjects. There was a bit of a panic when the school registration website went down but it’s all fine now!

stoneysongs · 24/08/2023 14:15

That's a great story Also, I am going to try to remember it next time I am grumbling about having to do something (usually not particularly) difficult!

stoneysongs · 24/08/2023 14:58

I am updating The List at the mo, which has reminded me to ask

@craggyrat how are you doing?

@Oblomov23 how is your back these days?

@Zebracat how is the hip?

And any news about results yet for the resitters?

craggyrat · 24/08/2023 15:24

Thanks @singingstones - I do read occasionally but not been keeping up. Well done to GCSE result folk.

Got my operation tomorrow- wide local excision and sentinel nodes removed. Results a couple of weeks later which determines treatment going forward . Head is a mess but physically fine. Been going to pre surgery gym classes. Just want the surgery done now so can plan what's next.

Still no first year results for DS. Hopeless! He has five more weeks at home so hopefully can earn a bit more money. Has started next year's pre reading.

crazycrofter · 24/08/2023 15:30

Wow @Alsoplayspiccolo that's an inspiring story, well done to her!!

I hope ds steps up this year... he did pass his driving theory test today and has booked a practical test at a random centre in Bham for the beginning of Feb.

Well done to all the GCSE takers @handmademitlove @PhotoDad @NCTDN @BlueMarigold

All the best for your op tomorrow @craggyrat , we'll be thinking of you

stoneysongs · 24/08/2023 15:38

Good luck @craggyrat, I hope it's easy, successful and that you recover quickly.

One thing at a time 💐

EversoDetermined · 24/08/2023 15:42

Well done to all the GCSE students, onwards to their next steps. @Alsoplayspiccolo that is an amazing story for your student.

@craggyrat sending best wishes for tomorrow Flowers

@crazycrofter well done to DS on the theory test my DS still needs to crack that (failed once but only just).

stoneysongs · 24/08/2023 15:45

Ok, here is the list, updated with any changes I have noticed and remembered.

I have been through this particular thread and included people who are still posting (plus a few old timers like Paddington and Horace) - our numbers grew quite a lot this time last year and I don't want to annoy people by tagging them into random threads they are no longer interested in. But - I'm certainly not trying to police who is "allowed" on the thread or anything like that! So please don't take offence - anyone who wants to be added or removed, let me know, and ditto with updates / incorrect info.

@craggyrat hope all goes well tomorrow 💐

@singingstones wow - great list. Thanks for updating DD.

sofakingcool · 24/08/2023 16:16

@OrangeCinnamonLatte

Loves Reading! We're actually there now building a bit of flat pack furniture - well he is, I'm "supervising"!

Off for a wander to the local pub in a bit, he wants to try and find a job for his second year so is going to pop in whilst we're here, get ahead of the freshers.

It's handy not living too far away (45 mins) as we've been moving him in slowly. He can then bring himself and his clothes up in his car when he starts mid sept

sofakingcool · 24/08/2023 16:18

Congrats to the GSCER's!

EwwSprouts · 24/08/2023 16:18

@craggyrat Hope tomorrow goes as smoothly as possible.

Well done on the GCSE results. They were so young when it was full on study at home.

@singingstones Thank you!

285NeuerNamen · 24/08/2023 16:28

Well done to the GCSEers!

Thanks @singingstones That must take ages, much appreciated :-)

Good luck for tomorrow @craggyrat , will be thinking of you.Flowers
