Grandchild….

So without the background and the whole life story…. My husbands daughter has a daughter and we are officially ‘Grandparents’ to a child the same age as our youngest. We can’t be called Grandad and Grandma … we’re too young and it’s too odd with our children too.
Please can you share your grandparent names that aren’t the usual Nanny, Grandad etc.

Thanks 🤣

My friend who ended up as a 'gran' to her DSS's child when she was still in her 30s went for a shortening of her first name. Another friend who hadn't come to terms with being grandparent aged (despite being in her 60s!) went for "nanny" and then a shortening of her name.

I would point out though that you might be too young to be a grandparent but your OH clearly isn't! Regardless of having had another child himself late in life. His DD may want him to embrace a grandfather role and not appear to be in denial about it. Ask her what she would like her child to call you both.

No he’s still a bit too young. He was young when she was born and she was waaaay to ting to be having a child. But we are where we are! And she agrees it’s all a bit weird with our three children being so young too.. hence asking for some ideas!

I became a gran at 37 and 40 and I had my last child at 40- I'm gran or granny to my grandchildren and mum to my children. Never gave it a second thought tbh.

WhatWeDoInTheShadow · 07/05/2023 23:09

But he is a grandparent whatever the age. I think you should just go with your favourite version of nanny / grandad. I like nanna and grandpa myself.

Fwiw, I know of more than one person who became a grandparent in their early thirties. One was 32 and I don't exactly know how old the other was

Our friends became grandparents a couple of years ago in their early 40s. They are Gigi and Papa.

cheesychips101 · 07/05/2023 23:12

Yeah but we really dont like those names as our elderly parents/grandparents are that. And my SD is saying the same so just asking for other name options/ideas!

I know a Gigi and Pop.

Fireyflies · 07/05/2023 23:15

I think papa could be very confusing - most people would assume a man being called papa was the child's father. Either go with some variant of gran/grandad or make something up.

Does the Gigi have any reference to the grandmas name? I love that but I knew a lady called Gigi once so just wondering

I’ve always preferred Nana / Nanna instead if grandma - grandmas are old.

It was always nana & granddad where I grew up.

dodofofo · 07/05/2023 23:32

Come to think of it, the reason they're Lolli & Pop is pretty much the same scenario as yours!!

Orders76 · 07/05/2023 23:35

Just your names?

sunshineandtea · 07/05/2023 23:38

Mama G or G Mama and Dada G or G daddy

Hummusanddipdip · 07/05/2023 23:38

Memaw
Meme/mimi
Maw
Gigi

Just a few suggestions that are traditionally grandma/granny/nanny/nan etc

lingmerth · 08/05/2023 00:18
