Emotional about DS (finally!) passing his driving test!

DS turned 17 in late summer of 2019 and started driving lessons. Just as he was ready to take his test in March 2020 covid hit and lessons and tests were cancelled.
The last two years have been a series of bookings/cancellations/ rebookings/ cancellations - and all this against a backdrop of it being virtually IMPOSSIBLE to get a test date, even when things opened up.

  • We've been up at 7.30am on Mondays to 'queue' in the online system
  • We paid £30 to subscribe to a cancellation app to find last minute test dates.
DS finally had his first test last summer but sadly failed. Then he went to uni and we couldn't get any suitable test dates for the Christmas holidays.

FINALLY he got a test date for today (while he's back for Easter) and he has just PASSED!

We were both in tears when he came back and told me, and I've only just realised what a massive great stress this was causing us both. His theory test certificate was due to run out in a few weeks and I was just dreading having to enter the whole cycle for both tests all over again.

Not sure what I want by posting here - just wanted to tell someone I'm just sooo f*cking relieved!!

That's great news. You should be proud

Great news, it’s so stressful, I cried when both my sons passed. I failed my first test, my second the examiners were on strike and the third time it was cancelled due to snow. When I finally passed my instructor said do not answer the phone that day as they were cancelling due to illness. Luckily I did get to do my test that day.

Aww! Congratulations. Totally get you and your son. I passed my test on the 6th attempt 3 days before my theory test ran out! It was along 2.5 year journey for me.

Lovely news!

Aww thanks! The best bit was seeing how happy he was! His year group had cancelled A levels, no proper 'leaving events', a ruined gap year, a slightly dodgy, covidy start to uni etc etc.

It's the first time I've seen him properly over the moon about something in ages!

That's great news. Well done to him

I have a DS of a similar age and he was extremely lucky-as was I- that he passed his test a week before the first lockdown. It has made life so much easier all round. I cannot imagine the frustration and delay.

Many of DS"s friends have given up trying as they have gone off to uni and perhaps they will never learn until much later.

Great news for your son and what a relief.
We have been in exactly the same position. 5 cancelled theory tests and learning disrupted by lessons spread over 2 years…5 lessons then lockdown each time! Also at some points it was illegal to even practise unless you were travelling to work ( luckily she worked up the road so was able to do the same short journey for a while).
That year group missed so many of the normal rites of passage.
We also cried when she passed.
