My 19-year-old son has been burning through cash. He had around £5000 for his 18th birthday last September that he was intending to use to go travelling to USA, but of course that couldn't happen, so he decided to use it to do some more UK based travel and had a couple of trips away to Scotland and Manchester with some friends. He also worked at Sainsburys doing around 12 hours a week, so income of around £100 a week. In June, he told us he had saved up 'loads' of money so left Sainsbury's to have the summer off with his friends before they all went to uni. The plan was to find some more work this Autumn. He socialises a lot, mostly at Wetherspoons and is out 4 or 5 times a week, often eating out too.

I assumed he still had some savings but now we have a problem. He has just told me that he only has £70 in his account. His 19th birthday was 2 weeks ago. I know that he had around £500 cash total for his birthday from various people.

I have no idea how he can have got through all his 18th birthday money. Or how he has spent £500 (min) in 2 weeks. In that 2 weeks I know he has bought 3 T shirts at around £20 each and filled his car with petrol. Even with going out, surely he can't have got through £500? He said he has spent it on going out, the T-shirts and petrol but it doesn't add up to me.

So, I snooped in his wallet and found two gambling membership cards for casinos that also do online gambling.

What would you think/do? I can't confront him about the cards as I shouldn't have been snooping.

Does he live with you?
I would confront him and ask where the money has gone and help him to find help for his addiction.
That’s a deposit on a house he’s gambled away, he must realise it’s a lot of money.
