I read this as wanting to get some iron pumped. Sorry, I can't help you DD was a lightweight at birth and contiunues to be slight to this day. and she is a kilogramme child.

What centile is he on? Is he bf or ff?

AKMD · 06/07/2010 19:21

My Ds is tiny but friend's DS is 19 weeks and 20lb, born at just over 6lb. Again, her Hv is saying he weighs too much but he is on the correct measure of formula feeds and doesn't look big for his build. If I were you, I would get a second opinion from a baby feeding specialist - can be found at your local breastfeeding clinic.

I agree with get a second opinion.

It does sound a lot but if he is still within the centile chart then I would have thought (possibly wrongly) that was ok. As you say, he was big when he was born and if his growth is following the correct curve then logic would say that is fine. I have know acutal experience or knowledge of this though.

At our local baby weighing clinic its not always the same HV, if you have a similar thing mebe you could go when its a different HV?

Without knowing how he is fed or which centile he is on its impossible to comment.

TheOldestCat · 07/07/2010 09:17

Are you breastfeeding? My DS is also huge (was 9lbs2 at birth' now over 19lbs at 18 weeks), on the 98th centile. I'm BF and the health visitor said it's fine as it's impossible to overfeed a BF baby. Not sure what the case is for FF.

Agree with the others that it's worth getting a second opinion.

Ineedsomesleep · 07/07/2010 09:20

Yes it is possible to overfeed a ff baby. My understanding was that the new charts were brought in so that the children who were overfed got referred and to stop all the bfing mums swapping to ff because they thought their DC wasn't getting enough.

apes79 · 07/07/2010 11:07

for kilogram weight he was born 5kg n is now 11.98kg. he's ff as i'd major problems with bf.he was born above the 98th centile n is stil above it! so trackin the same line. which i tawt was a good thing? trackin same centile i mean. my dd followed her centile since birt n till does. ds is long/tall for his age too. so in proportion really- he looks like an average one yr old!
tanx for replies , i'll seek second opinion from my usual hv. think he may have been weighed by nursery nurse yest at clinic.
i'm worried they have concerns about him due to me bein overweight!

I've had a quick glance at the standard centile charts in the red book: I don't know exactly what gestation your son was, but at 5kg birth weight it's likely he's always been above the 99.6th centile. Now, at nearly 12kg, he's significantly over 99.6th centile, but the question is whether his current weight is much MORE over the line than he was to begin with (ie. gaining too much weight) or the SAME amount over (ie. starting big, but growing at a normal rate). You need to get professional advice about this one from somebody with all his charts and details.

Would you feel happy discussing this again with your original/another HV? Laura and AKMD are right, a second opinion might help. If you have trouble finding a infant feeding specialist in your area, your GP could also advise you.

apes79 · 07/07/2010 15:29

have just been to see my usual HV. and yes CitrusMaxima he's significantly over the top centile(which he was above at birth, i incorrectly put 98th centile earlier) this time but my HV isn't too concerned. i started him on solids 4wks ago, but only reduced milk volume this wk now he's taken to the solids. but his activity level has also increased now he's rollin round n commando crawlin! so second opinion has reassured me. will only be weighed by our HV from now on. as she's well aware of his birth weight n progress etc. tanx for all the comments n advice.

i'm just wantin to be the best mum i can be!
