Pushchair for 5 year old in Florida

Going to Florida for first time next month, a friend who has been loads of time recomends that we take a pushchair for DD aged 5 due to the heat and DCs not wanting to walk. We would have to buy one, but it would still be cheaper than $15 dollars a day to hire, however DP thinks I've lost the plot. All advice welcome please.

We took a pushchair for my 5yo niece when we went to New York. It's a hell of a lot of walking round for a child in places like that. I don't see the harm in taking it. Ask your DP if he'd be happy carrying her or putting up with the whinging when she's tired

booyhoo · 03/07/2010 23:15

does she use a pushcahir now? i imagine you will be considering your DD when you plan your days so you would be taking into consideration how far she can walk and teh heat but then i have never been to florida so could be talking right outta my arse.

see, i am talking outta my arse. dont listen to me.

where are you going? we go to Orlando and find that we drive most places. The theme parks have buggies.

ToonTime · 03/07/2010 23:23

We are staying in Disney, so it is really to walk around the theme parks. Would she seem out of place in a cheap pushchair compared to a $15 a day disney buggy. Actually DP had DD on his shoulders today and said it would be the last time ever as she is getting too heavy

I wouldn't want to carry DS2 (who is 3) all round Disney...but if I put him in a push chair there would be one almighty row. We haven't taken it on holiday with us since he was 2.4, and have not regretted it. He managed Euro Disney in Feb (at 3.2) considerably better than I did. But that is another story!

Obviously it wasn't hot there ... but we were in middle east in Oct when he was nearly 3 and managed fine without a pushchair. I imagine the temp was pretty similar to Florida (early - mid 30s and a bit humid).

Not trying to be smug here (sounds like it having re-read my post), but will totally depend on whether your DD likes push chairs or walking!

Have you thought of a sling?

ToonTime · 04/07/2010 00:10

If she wants to, she will walk miles. We've done Eurodisney in the winter too and she'd walk all day around Alice's Labyrinth and she did whem she was 3 on a Saturday when the queues for everything else were huge.

I think I'll get a pushchair and if she doesn't use it fine, better then using half our spending money on buggy hire.

When we went to Florida we bought a buggy from Kmart. It was about $30... but so worth it.
My friend's daughter was 8 and I felt so sorry for her because she was dead on her feet compared to her 4 year old sister in the buggy.
Have gun!

bethjeff · 04/07/2010 17:52

ohmygod don't have gun- have fun!!

hocuspontas · 04/07/2010 17:59

Look on freecycle? Dd3 was 4 and and I wouldn't have been without ours. Also saved us having to carry bags and drinks etc! There's so much queuing and walking that often the older dds would take turns to sit in it. Also useful at the airports.

scrappydappydoo · 04/07/2010 18:01

Definitely buy a cheapo buggy out there..
The park ones are expensive and you can't take them out of the park - so if you're dd falls asleep after fireworks you don't have to carry her... its worth it just because they do get tired in the heat and it is a lot of walking. There are buggy parks everywhere so you could just leave it in one until you need it...
She will be by no means the oldest in buggy no-one tends to bat an eyelid at disney

mamatomany · 04/07/2010 18:07

We took a phil and teds for our 4 and 6 year old and needed it, the 8 year old got in it sometimes too.
When we got home we sold it and the difference between what we lost on the P&T's was still less than hiring the huge cart type prams at disney etc, plus you can't take those out of the park.

I used to go every year with my dad from the age of 11 I would be shattered buy a pushchair . You will have a great time . Wish I could afford to take the dc.

DisneyStarTia · 14/08/2010 02:25

Hi I would strongly advise you to take a pushchair for her! I have been to orlando 8 times and im off again in 4 weeks time! This will be my 6 year old daughters first time and I am def taking one!
We,ll be getting up at 7 am and getting on buses to Disney and all the other parks and will be arriving back to the hotel late, around 9, and then off out again along I drive to eat out! So the amount of walking she will be doing is enough to make us adults feel shattered! and trust me it does ;-)
I would no way waste my money on rentals plus the new modern disney strollers have hard plastic seats which you need to put a towel or blanket on it to give it cushioning! thats the last thing you want to carry around with you in 90 degree heat! Another thing you could do is go to walmart while your out there, they sell them for very cheap around $20 and dont worry what you look like in disneyworld...most parents there have maclarens and dont bother with the rentals! And please dont listen to people telling you your crazy putting a 5 year old in a pushchair! until you,ve been to Florida in that Blaizing heat all day they cannot judge you! my cousin was 7 and was in it all day long..Kids need to cool off and take a rest, have a drink, pull the sunshade down and maybe have a nap! I will be taking a quinny zapp because its so light to carry and folds up easy! but please do not under estimate how hot it can be in florida many times ive been out there and temp has reached over 100! so for kids its totally draining! Hope all your dreams come true in Florida and you have a amazing time Luv Chelle x
