Terry squares!

Hi!

I'm about to buy my first nappies for dc2. I used disposables first time around and am very excited about using washables this time!!

I want to use flat terry squares - there are a few different brands/makes around. Which have been your favourites? I don't mind whether they're organic, bleached, not bleached etc... But I am thinking I want:
1 soft but not too thick,
2 quickest dryers and
3 least bulky for small bottom - is it worth getting smaller squares to start with? I'm having a boy this time. DD was 6lb (but three weeks early) so I don't expect a whopper maybe 7 - 7.5lb at most I would hope guess.

Has anyone used muslin instead of terry for a newborn? How did it go? I have loads in the cupboard from dd.

What are your favourite folds for boys? I (and DH) are going to need to practise in advance!

In terms of wraps - I'm going to get a few different ones and see which are the nicest fit.

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who replied to my original post about using washables in a gardenless flat. I'm so glad I posted

It has set me in a thrifty (and reusable) frame of mind for the arrival of DS which is a lovely start to preparations!

i use terries.i use bamboo, less bulk more absorbant and dry just as quick.
i used muslins with a hemp booster for the first couple of weeks.
always used the bat fold for my boys it is very neat and pad in the right place.
i use mother ease rikkis mostly but have invested in some popngro onesize wraps which i am so impressed with.only got them last week and DS is 21weeks so don'tknow what they would be like on a teeny.
any other questions let me know.
i love my terries and always go back to them even when tempted by goreous all in ones or pockets.

I really liked Bright Bots terries as they come in lots of lovely colours, I used,I think it's called the origami fold where you end up with a thick rectangle with two triangles on each side. They arn't too bulky either.

mumface · 30/06/2010 13:08

Just checked it's the bat/chinese/origami, fold are the same thing.

we just had mothercare terries because we got a mothercare voucher as a present from my work...

We used disposable for the first week then those from then-potty training, with a booster at night later on. didn't use muslins, but dd was over 8lb and as I said we didn't use cloth for the first week.

DD isn't a boy (surprise surprise!) so not sure about 'boy' folds, but we used the bat fold until dd got too big, then the kite fold when she was older.

this is a good selection of folds and info about them...

Thanks raindroprhyme and mumface (he he I love the name) any nappy arrangement called bat fold is likely to get my vote (to be called origami fold to impress people obv).

Thanks RobynLou my friend has given me some newborn disposables she had left over. Thinking about it, it would make more sense to use those and use the muslins as burp cloths again....

I am VERY tempted by the bright bots - I find the idea of masking any slight staining (which I imagine must happen sometimes) appealing and they are lovely colours.

I will also have a little look at popngro wraps - haven't come across those before. I think a couple of different ones is going to be best for starters....

Bright bots are ace. I have some of those, some little ewes (good for nights, older toddlers but very thick and bulky), some Mothercare (thin, very thin. Don't hold much!) and some nappy nation bamboo ones (nice, slim but have not worn as well as my other nappies). Bright Bots are my faves as they fit a toddler well but are not too bulky on a baby and the colours are fun

Muslins can be used for ages folded in the same way as a terry, they are very absorbant and certainly less bulky.

megonthemoon · 30/06/2010 18:34

I used muslins with my DS in the first few weeks and will do the same with DD due in Sept. Did the Jo Fold - very easy as I could just fold them all up after washing so didn't have to faff at each nappy change. Just put the padded bit at the front (think you put it at the back for girls).

I didn't move onto terries in the end (went with Bumgenius), but did try a few out during the first 3 months before I decided to go with BGs. Bamboo are really absorbent, but bulkier and took longer to dry than the terries I tried.

ziggyf · 01/07/2010 13:35

I used muslins for both my boys when they were newborn - it worked very well. I considered using terries but I'm not very good at the folding so used bamboozles in the end! Bright Bots terries are on offer here:

Hi ziggyf thanks very much for the link!

They also have a bundle offer with bright bots, some wraps an various other stuff like bucket etc. It seems fairly good value, though I'd already ordered a couple of bits elsewhere, if I hadn't I would've gone for it - worth a look for anyone else interested in using (brightly coloured!) terries...

I think I might get a couple of little ewes for night time too - they certainly LOOK absorbent and soft

I've ordered some bright bots and a couple of little ewes. Got a couple of motherease rikkis and a totsbots wrap, plus have bought a day pack of flexitots size 2 version 2 for night time - it has 5 nappies and one wrap in it. Though the folding doesn't seem all that hard, there's a limit to how much faff I want at 3am. I remember just bfing with eyes shut difficult enough in the first few weeks!

I am just waiting for my nappies to arrive now!! Oh and the baby to arrive of course... though I still have AGES to go...

Yay for shiny nappies!

PotPourri · 07/07/2010 18:27

Muslins are fab anf are really absorbant, soft, not bulky and dy really quickly. Also used the bat fold and origami (like an envelope?) I also made up my own folds when the mood took me. And used terries til potty training - sometimes with muslin liner when the terries felt a bit crunchy.

Bamboo is good for toddlers at night as less bulk for the same level of absorbancy.and little ewes fab. hemp boosters are great - but dry like cardboard unless tumbled!!

Motrherease rikki are far and away my favourite wraps. Followed by tots bots.

BTW, dont bother changing the nappy in the night unless dirty (maybe i'm just a bad mum! LOL)

PotPourri · 07/07/2010 18:30

Just thinking, do you want some teeny wraps and nippas ffp? I've got a post in free www.mumsnet.com/Talk/for_free/998006-Nappy-wraps-and-nippers

hopingforanother · 09/07/2010 12:44

Hi PotPourri! Thanks for the offer, but my stuff has just arrived so I'm ok for the moment on the kit front!
