How should I go about getting a passport photo for my 10 month old? Need to do it this week to send passport off. Do I just hold her up in the booth and hope for the best??

My local photographic shop does passport photos. They have a pull down screen with a seat in front. I had to crouch down and prop my kids up - there can't be any part of another person in the picture, but we managed this quite successfully at about 2 months old. You can probably do this in a booth, but the positioning might by a bit difficult. The rules are slightly relaxed for babies, I think they don't have to be looking at the camera (or even have their eyes open!). However they do have to be within the correct 'dimensions'

I'll try and get to our local shop then. Thing is, he's always got a sign on the door saying 'Out on a shoot' whenever I go past, so have never managed to ask!

We just took our DD's picture ourselves and printed it on the home PC. I know it says it has to be 'professionally printed' but ours came back with no problems.

We layed DD on the floor (she was only 2 months old though) on a cream mat and stood over her to take the pic. It took several shots, but that was more to get one we liked as opposed to one they would accept. She is sort of facing the camera but at an angle, you can only see one of her ears IYSWIM?

I wouldn't worry about it, or pay too much for professional shots as they are quite relaxed if the child is under 1 year.

snappy snaps does baby passport photos as well. they have a changing mat they put the baby on and take the photo from above. They also guarantee to be accepted by the passport office.

I took DS2 today (10 weeks) they took a photo of him in his pram and then digitally added a white background!

ohnelly · 01/07/2010 10:47

If you do go into one of the booths you will need two people - this is what we did:-
I held DS up making sure my hands were not in the shot, and when I was ready DP pressed the button! it did take 2 attempts (@ £4 each!) to get it though

Jcee · 01/07/2010 11:29

We took DD's (15 weeks) pic ourselves too - we draped a white blanklet over her bouncy chair and sat her in it and took the pic fairly close up and head on so there was no other background other than blanket iyswim.

Passport came back with no probs. As curlyLJ says they are quite relaxed if the child is under 1 year.

We went to a shop in town, I think it cost £7 but it was worth it, I think if they sent the application back because of the pics they would have taken them again for free. But he scraped through although his hair was almost in his eyes whoops! He was 18m though, the rules for babies are laxer but your hands etc can't be showing at all which is trickier in a booth at £4 a time!

Kalikaroo · 07/07/2010 12:07

When we had one done for DS when he was 3mo we went to a shop to have it done. I had to wear a cream cover just like you do at the hairdresser and DS sat on my knee! Worked really well! I think it cost about £10 for 4 pictures.

flootshoot · 07/07/2010 14:01

I need to do this too. My DS is 16 months....wish me luck......!

Go to picture lizard

www.picturelizard.co.uk/HowToTakeABabyPassportPhoto.php?cPath=95_151_715

Take the pic yourselves (they give you tips on how) then send it to them and they'll send you passport photos back. Costs about £3.

laisee · 08/07/2010 13:17

Or www.paspic.com - they were fab - we uploaded a photo i took where DD was on the carpet and we got the photos in the post next day. cheaper than a proper photo studio one.

shell96 · 08/07/2010 13:34

We took pic of DS with DPs mobile phone camera, lying on his white change mat (he was only about 6 weeks so not too wriggley). Uploaded them to e-passport photo where you can adjust to official sizes and printed them ourselves.

Passport came back no problems at all.
