DD (5 1/2 months) LOVES Row, Row, Row Your Boat. It's the first nursery rhyme she smiles at.

Does anyone know any similar rhymes? Similar in that you sit the child on your lap and move them back and forth or side to side. Would be nice to have a variety! Have tried See, Saw, Margery Daw but she just looks bored :P

I know some in German but I want some in English

DD used to like:

Yankee Doodle done as if she was riding a horse (on my knees)

Horsey Horsey where she was sitting on my foot and being moved up and down

Went to a Barbers Shop Buh Bum
To have my hair cut off buh bum
when I got there, I sat on the chair
and the chair went PLOP (pretending to drop her)

HTH

Thanks! I forgot about Yankee Doodle.

DD (8 months) also loved Row Row Row Your Boat. She also loved the Grand Old Duke of York (gently lifting her up and down or sitting on the floor and raising my knees up), Horsey Horsey (I moved her hands round for the wheels then swished them o the side for the tail) and Humpty Dumpty (with my raised knees as the wall). Her current favourite is Sleeping Bunnies - she just goes crazy giggling when I 'hop' her up and down. We sometimes sing it with her lying/sitting on the bed and bounce the mattress which she also loves.

I bounced DS on my knee to the Bonanza theme tune . He still asks for it now & again but at 4.5 it nearly breaks my leg!

MrsBadger · 29/06/2010 13:12

This is the way the farmer rides

The grand old duke of York (lift them up and down as the words suggests)

we also do a great one at the library that I hadn't heard before:

Diddly diddly dee
I bounce you on my knee
Diddly diddly doh
Whoops! down you go
Diddly diddly di
Way up high
Diddly diddly doo
I love you (cuddle them)

  • can't find it on line but will have a bash at notating the tune if you need it
MrsBadger · 29/06/2010 13:15

oh and Bumping up and down in my little red wagon

Psammead · 29/06/2010 13:18

MrsBadger - thanks. It's OK, I'll just make up my own song to go with it. Thanks for the words

LOL @ Bonanza!

The pirate song:

When I was one I hurt my thumb
the day I went to sea
I jumped aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me,

'we're going... this way
that way
forwards and backwards
over the Irish sea
A bottle of rum to warm my tum
and that's the life for me!'

Lots of moving, and you can keep going with the verses (when I was two I buckled my shoe, etc)

Rockbird · 29/06/2010 13:30

Wind the Bobbin Up? No side to sides but lots of movement.

BornToFolk · 29/06/2010 13:37

Do you know the extra verses to Row Row?
"Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream,
If you see a crocodile, don't forget to scream...."

"Row, row, row your boat gently to the shore,
If you see a lion there, don't forget to roar...."

"Row, row, row your boat gently down the river,
If you see a polar bear, don't forget to shiver..."

The roaring and screaming are very popular with DS!

ifyourmotheraskedyou · 29/06/2010 13:48

row row row your boat
gently to and fro
this way, that way
into the water we go!

Psammead · 29/06/2010 13:53

Yes, we sing all those ones BornToFolk! She loves the roaring best too

Didn't know that verse ifyourmotheraskedyou but will incorporate

Ours is slightly different:

Rock, rock, rock your boat
Gently to and fro
Watch out, big shout
Over the side we go!

My cousin taught that verse to DD and now she's not interested in rowing, she wants to be tipped upside down

josla · 29/06/2010 14:28

Both DDs love this one:
Sit them on lap facing you, hold their hands/arms - i hope you can make sense of this by the way! -

fishes in the water, (lean them to left)
fishes in the sea, (lean them to right)
who do you like best? (bring them to middle)
fishes or me? (lay them back then bring them forwards)

then they can choose who they like best - fishes - then you lean them back again towards the floor, me - then they get a cuddle!

second verse - same first two lines, then -
we all jump in
with a one, two, three!

TheklaVonStift · 29/06/2010 14:33

I have never heard the pirate one? I love it!

Is this one peculiar to my family?

Start sitting with the child on your knees, facing away with their legs to the left, then bounce them up and down in time to the words:

Two little doggies
Went over to Dover
When they came to a stile
Up they went over (swing child up in the air and down so they end up facing right)

It makes no sense (dogs, Dover, stiles?!) but all children seem to love it!

MrsBadger · 29/06/2010 15:12

my grandpa used to do 'the dog went to Dover'

whatname · 29/06/2010 15:37

DS came home from nursery with a song I had never heard of. We call it the Hammer Song.
Hammer, hammer, hammer
Shake, shake, shake
sshh, ssshh sshh
clap, clap clap

Lionstar · 29/06/2010 15:39

Wheels on the bus every time. My 9 month old DS even tries to do the actions now - so cute

We have extra verses for Row, row:

Drive, drive, drive your car gently down the road (move hands like driving)
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily with a heavy road - Beep, Beep (on their nose)

Shunt, shunt, shunt your train gently down the track (move hands like train pistons)
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily up the line and back - Toot, toot (arm action like pulling on a bell cord)

mandylifeboats · 29/06/2010 15:40

How about 'Two Little Dickybirds'?

Lionstar · 29/06/2010 15:41

heavy load

NoSleepTillWeaning · 29/06/2010 15:44

Three little men in a flying saucer flew round the world one day ( move baby in circle)

They looked left and right (wiggle baby l and r)but didn't like the sight so one man flew away (lift baby)

2 men etc

Or: jelly on a plate, jelly on a plate, wibble wobble wibble wobble, jelly on a plate.

Psammead · 29/06/2010 17:34

There are some great suggestions here!

Here's what we sing...

Horsey ride singing "She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes"

Rocking back and forth to "My Bonny Lies Over the Ocean"

Flying through the air to "Zoom zoom zoom we're going to the moon, zoom zoom zoom we're going very soon 5 - 4 - 3 - 2- -1 Lift off" Well not throw exactly but lift over head ---- Great for the arm muscles!!!

I had forgotten all about row row row your boat!!
