Tummy time?

When should I start? DD is currently 8 weeks, and if I put her on her tummy she just wiggles and tries to latch onto the floor. Doesn't attempt to push up on arms at all.

I think (well, I always have anyway) you should start as early as they are comfy with it. My DD is 7 weeks and can spend a while on her tummy, either head held up a little or just facing head sideways resting on the floor looking at her brothers play. I did the same with the boys. Although I have heard it can be tricky with reflux babies. If she doesnt like it, just give it a rest and try again in a week or so? Remember she is tiny, and they wont push up until they are ready and the muscles are strong enough. Their heads are so heavy!

Also, keep in mind that it counts as tummy time if you lay them face down against your chest, i.e. with their head on your shoulder, and they lift their heads a bit.

I found that lying ds on my chest was better as he would lift his head to look around. I put him on his playmat on his tummy but he just wiggled as well to begin with, although he is 14 weeks tomorrow and he is starting to try to push up on his arms now.

Try supporting her under her chest with your hand, or propping her on a rolled up towel. That means their head is off the floor, so they can see a bit more. Doing it on a bed facing you while you sit/kneel on the floor is also good, because you can interact with them, which makes them more likely to have a go.

Time in a sling / baby carrier, over your shoulder, 'mountaineering' up your chest, in a bouncy chair or sitting up supported on your lap all help head control too.

Don't try it for long at once and don't worry if she doesn't want to do what she is 'supposed' to - as long as you're giving her the opportunity to practise, she'll be fine.

Lots of babies hate tummy time. My DS is 6 months and still hates it. He used to push himself off the floor at around 4 months, but he's given up doing this now unless he's in the bath. (He just puts his arms behind him and 'swims' instead of pushing up.) He's very nearly rolling over now, though, so I don't think it's done him any harm.

just make sure the floor/mat is clean.
do it little and often and he will get the hang of it.
dd did not like it at first but by 3 months she was shrieking in delight when I put her on her tummy and was wiggling toys in front of her.
