What time do your 6 and 5 year olds go to bed?

Just wondering, I thought ours went a bit later than most at 8pm with reading and lights out at 8.30pm by the latest. This is on a school night on a non school night it is 8.45pm at the latest.

I know some people have theirs in bed at 7.30pm.

DD1's 6yo friend is still playing out in the street at 8.30pm out of sight of her parents. We bring DD1 and 2 in at 7pm as I think that is late enough for them.

So what do others do?

tonight? as soon as I get off mn.

Usually, any time between 7.30 and 8pm. Waht time ds2 actually goes to sleep is a different matter and another thread. But thats when lights out usually is. Otherwise they're sleep deprived horrors.

Tortoise · 25/06/2010 20:39

DD1 7 and DD2 5 go between 7pm and 7.30pm. DD1 is always up around 6.30/7am and DD2 needs her sleep.

DanJARMouse · 25/06/2010 20:40

DD1 is 6 next month. Usually bed it 7.20pm but as you well know she is a PITA when it comes to bedtime so can be anything up to 9pm before she crashes out.

DD2 is 5 in October, and always out cold by 7.30pm

I think you do what works for you SK! x

7-7.30

My 6 yo has JUST gone to bed. It is the weekend though. In the week, we aim for 8pm and a story.

McSteamy · 25/06/2010 20:42

DS is nearly 5 - he's in bed at 7pm asleep by 7.30pm after stories prayers etc.

DD is 7 and goes to bed at 8pm but finds it hard to drop of to sleep can still be awake at 9pm.

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 25/06/2010 20:48

We aim for 8pm with DS1 (6) then have a story. He likes going to bed but often can't get to sleep until about 8.45 - 9.00 and is up at 6.30 the next morning with no sign of tiredness. He has never needed as much sleep as I would like him to have everybody else.

Francagoestohollywood · 25/06/2010 20:55

Mine used to go to bed at 8pm at that age, asleep by 8.30.

CantSupinate · 25/06/2010 21:00

Oh, we are going to set the record tonite .
9:30pm.

Up until 2 weeks ago it was 8:30pm. And in the last 2 months it was a huge struggle. He would bounce in and out of bed and fuss and sing and shout and demand I sit with him and want a drink or a snack or to read or a toy... I'd spend 75 minutes waiting for him to kip off.

So now we've gone to 9:30pm as lights out; he mucks about for 10 minutes, natters for 5-10 minutes and finally goes down just before 10pm. I can cope with that.

He is often the first one up in the morning, 6:30-7pm. Is currently doing handstands on the sofa and begging me for bagels (sigh).

CantSupinate · 25/06/2010 21:01

Oops, I meant 6:30-7am.

orienteerer · 25/06/2010 21:04

DS (7.10) goes to bed 19.00-19.30 on school days, latest 20.00 at weekend. We're up at 06.15-06.30 on a school day and I often have to wake him so he clearly needs his sleep

DramaInPyjamas · 25/06/2010 21:05

I have a 6 and a 5.

7-8pm we start the bedtime routine - washed, pyjamas, story, etc..
They can read in bed or play with a small toy if they want to. But they share a room, so it can get a bit chaotic!

Holidays and weekends it's usually 9ish. They wake up at 7am most mornings.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 25/06/2010 21:06

DS1 (6) and DS2 (4) go to bed 7-7.30pm but DS1 is allowed to read in his bed (own room) for a while afterwards.

sowhatis · 25/06/2010 21:07

mine go to bed about 8 on a school night and 9-10pm at the weekend depending on what we are doing, sometimes its still 8pm!

NorbertDentressangle · 25/06/2010 21:09

7-7.30pm on a school night, a bit later at weekends unless he's tired.

I have been known to occasionally tell a white lie about the time and get him in bed before 7pm if he's doing my head in tired.

He goes off to sleep pretty quickly. In fact he does like his sleep so rarely puts up a fight at bedtime

expatinscotland · 25/06/2010 21:12

I can't get my 4-year-old to sleep before 9PM in this light. And yes, we have blackout blinds and curtains.

littlebrownmouse · 26/06/2010 23:23

My five year old is usually in bed and asleep by 6.30, she falls asleep as soon as her head hits the pillow! My 7 year old has lights out at 7pm after reading for a bit, doesn't always go straight to sleep but doesn't seem to mind that! They are both early risers though which I suppose would be a downside to most people, but DH and I like to be up and about early as well, so most of the time it suits us.

Helokitty · 27/06/2010 20:02

I have a 6 1/2 year old and a 3 1/2 year old DD.

The 6 year old is in bed between 7 and 7.30 most nights, but two nights a week, she has gymnastics and on those nights she goes to bed between 8 and 8.30. At the weekends, she still goes to bed for 7.30 as she has to be up at 7.30am to go to gymnastics for 9am on a Saturday morning, and so Sundays are her only lie in days. Therefore, sometimes we allow her to stay up to 8pm on a saturday night but that is a rare treat - too often she is just too tired for that.

But, she lives a very active life and does tend to wake about 6.30 - 7.00 am no matter what time she goes to sleep, so late nights are not really an option for us.

CaurnieBred · 29/06/2010 13:03

DD5 goes upstairs around 7/7.30 pm and is in bed by 8 pm. She goes to sleep when she falls asleep - some nights is quicker than others. That is on school nights. On Friday and Saturdays the earliest up to bed for her is 8 pm but never later than 9 pm (unless we are at friends and she is playing with the older kids).

Littlefish · 29/06/2010 13:08

DD is 5. She goes to bed between 7.00-7.30pm. She has to be woken up for school almost every day at about 7.30pm. At weekends, she sleeps until 8.00 - 8.30pm.

I would love to put her to bed earlier as she obviously needs the sleep, but we just don't seem to be able to do it, with reading, supper, bath etc.

sweetkitty · 29/06/2010 15:10

Thanks so we are a bit later than average it would seem.

Now it is the holidays we are putting them to bed at 8.30pm with light out at 9pm, they have blackout curtains so the room is generally quite dark. DD2 is falling asleep quickly but DD1 is still taking a while too, she is fine though mostly reads to herself. I am waking them both at 8am though no later.
