Nappy changing procedure

Quick poll: do you use disposable wipes and if so, how often? E.g. at every nappy change, just when out of the house, never...
Just asking because I tend to wash my baby's bottom in the sink whenever possible and use the wipes basically only if out of the house and was wondering whether I am typical or atypical. He also gets a bath more or less once a day...
And speaking of baths, what is the advantage of a sponge over Mummy or Daddy's hand?

Use reusable wipes all of the time. Bath once a day - currently use hand but planning on moving to flannel/sponge for a bit more scrubbage esp under her chin

how old is the baby? Used to wash his bum with water, but when he'd 'toughened up' a bit, wipes all the time.

Bath every day, it's good for initiating bedtime.

Its a while ago but disposable wipes every time and all the time.

Only a complete wash down over the bath with a shower when there was a complete nappy failure.

Washable wipes with plain water at home, disposable wipes when out. Also bath daily for bedtime plus they are at a very grubby age.

I wash them with my hands plus baby wash in the bath, just use a cloth or sponge on face.

Disposable wipes for soiled nappy, nothing if just wet. I reckon a little wee is more pleasant on his bum than the chemicals in the wipes so use as few as poss. He does have a bath every day though.

Disposable wipes or a wet flannel (whatever is to hand) every time. Bath every three days or so, depending on muckiness levels.

I use cotton pads and baby lotion when we're in the house and DS has just weed, and wipe if there's been poo..... And wipe all the time when out of the house...

MrsChemist · 22/06/2010 21:08

Wipes all the time. DS point blank refuses to stay still for nappy changing. I need to use as few accoutrements as possible, because if I faff for even a second, he is off, crawling away, getting poo all over the place.

He has a bath every night, though it's more to settle him before bed than get him clean.

Washable wipes at home, disposible wipes when out and about. However my dd is 14 months. I didn't use disposible wipes until she was 9 months

Cotton balls and water all the time when changing nappy, but now as we go to potty training, I use wet wipes for cleaning his bum.

Interesting spread of opinion/practice. On the day i posted this we had the perfect demonstration of why sometimes disposable wipes and changing mats (which i had considered next to useless until then) are brilliant. Went for a long walk, baby filled his nappy and clearly needed changing. Nappy turned out to be extremely full and contents had spread through two layers of clothes. Don't know how we would have managed without disposable wipes and mat (as well as the help of two kindly mothers who supplied further wipes and a clean mat when my own became unusable)...

Cotton wool and water at home, disposable wipes when out and about.

Currently bathing a couple of times a day (just water, no soap etc) as he enjoys splashing and kicking in the water so much.

Don't know what the benefits of sponge/flannel over hand are. I use hand to get in the neck creases and sponge to squeeze water on his tum to make him laugh.
