What am I going to need to get in preparation for DC2

i'm starting to write a list of things I'm going to need for DC2... I'm hoping it's a short list....!

I have all the clothes, muslins, bath, sling stuff from DC1. And we got a phil and ted's with the second seat with DC1 so don't need a buggy...

So i guess it's mostly stuff that I'll need duplicates of... My list so far:

Baby monitor - will be in different room to DC1
Second Mattress protector
Disposible New Baby nappies - we've got washables but I'll want a few disposables for the meuconium days....

Anything else....? Seems worryingly short..

we got a playpen/travel cot so i keep ds2 toys in there otherwise ds1 will just take everything not leaving ds2 in peace to play sometimes, my mum insisted it would be essential so thats why i got it but not really essential actually...
thats about it other than what u mentioned
oh how about a new chest of drawers for new babies clothes, or somewhere to put their stuff?
otherwise buggy is the main one which you already got

KnitterNotTwitter · 22/06/2010 14:16

Firawla thanks for that wardrobe/chest of drawers is a relly good point...!

And talking about clothes has reminded me that a laundry basket for DC2 needs to be added to the list - I do our washing separately...

So far all I had to get was a double pushchair (p&t)
DS is 2 on thurs and DD is 16 weeks.

Ohh and a newborn to toddler rocker chair from ebay as DD didn't like bouncer and i was worried ds would break it when he kept trying to sit in it.

KnitterNotTwitter · 22/06/2010 16:21

ahedgehogis thanks for this - good point re the baby bouncer. DS used the second chair of the phil and teds with the adapter kit as a baby bouncer but I expect i'll have that permanantly attached to the P&T so maybe a separate bouncer would be a good idea...

Slow cooker. Complete life saver.

When's your baby due? I'm currently trying to make the same list for arrival of DC3 in October. I'm also looking at things that the older two will have grown out of and will need replacing so I don't have to traipse around to get them all when I'd rather just curl up on the sofa! Mind you, I'm a list freak (i find it comforting) so I wouldn't get too close to me!

KnitterNotTwitter · 23/06/2010 20:14

skimty I love lists too :-)

DC2 is due 1st of Feb

When we had DS2 I only bought nappies and wipes as I had kept everything from DS1 - it was months and months before I bought anything specifically for DS2

SpeedyGonzalez · 23/06/2010 23:49

Lots of chocolate.

LOTS of chocolate.

Also (am currently reading this - DC2 is 7 weeks old) - Kate Evans' book on breastfeeding (I'm assuming you're planning to, as you're also using cloth nappies - fellow Earth Mother alert?! )

Sling - to enable you to give DC1 attention whilst cuddling/ allowing DC2 to sleep.

Congrats and good luck! Handling two is much easier than you may think.

nubbins · 24/06/2010 09:53

an extra washing line, if you'll have 2 in washables nappies. we wash them every day now, so I pretty much have one line for clothes and one for nappies!

KnitterNotTwitter · 24/06/2010 21:03

speedy yes wannabe Earth Mother here. Will look out the Kate Evans book - thanks.

Already have a ring sling from DS1 (and a Wilkinet, and a BabyBjorn as the others are too complicated for DH!!)

Will definitely add chocolate to the list

nubbins Hmmm - yes extra washing good point. Am vagually hoping that DS1 will be toilet trained by then - about a month ago he was super keen and interested in the potty but he seems to have gone off the idea now :-(

even if you have the p&T have you got a sling?
i find it is much easier at the playgrounds or a toddler group to carry DS2 in a sling rather than leave him in the buggy (+ DS2 hates the P&T because he cannot sees anything and gets bored - he is 3 months)

Traintastic · 25/06/2010 19:44

A straight jacket .

Watching with interest though as we have a 3 yr old ds and are planning dc 2 any time soon.

We are clueless and don't have much left from ds as we sold it all on ebay, swearing we'd never have any more!!! I even sold the high chair and my Kari Me sling which I LOVED!

A lot of things we bought for ds were left unused, whilst other things we didn't have I think we could have done with.

megonthemoon · 25/06/2010 19:55

I'm expecting DC2 in Sept. So far I have got on my list:

P&T (which I've already bought from eBay).

Erm, that's it

You might want to get a few extra washables in case you don't get round to washing every day, assuming you have 2 in nappies (I was hoping to potty train DS (2.3) but needs a miracle I think, so will have 2 in washables)

What is the difference in time of year versus DC1? My DS was March and this one will be Sept which means that all the 3-6 month stuff I have is summer stuff whereas this one will be 3-6 months in the middle of winter, so I will actually need wintery things for DC2 in different sizes to what I have - hats, snowsuits, cardigans, winter clothes etc. But I'm going to wait to see what we get in gifts before I buy as we received loads of clothes with DS.

TBH there is so little that I need, that I am actually going to take the opportunity to buy DC2 a few special things (couple of lovely toys, few nice clothes) to complement all the hand-me-downs whereas poor DS got Tesco babygros only as we had so much expense elsewhere!

SpeedyGonzalez · 25/06/2010 23:47

Another useful tip: look for Dr Karp (or is it Karg?) and his '5 S' approach to settling a baby. You will thank me.

KnitterNotTwitter · 27/06/2010 20:53

speedy yep - used Harvey Karp's Happiest Baby on the Block with DS1... Will get it out of the bookshelf for a re-read.

meg - good point re Seasons. They'll be 6 months adrift of each other... Hmmm may have to get more clothes than I thought.... Will buy as needed....
