What does your 16mth old play with?

I have a busy DS who is not big on sitting and playing with one or two toys. Most of the time he likes to go for walks or busy himself around the house.

However, there are times when we can't go out/to playgroup/etc and he is getting fed up with his existing toys.

Any suggestions???

I only have a 14m dd, but she is very very active too. I find it very hard to contain her sometimes. I recent bought her some Woody Click toysBut I got mine from TkMaxx for cheap. I took away the little pieces. She loves playing with it, taking it apart, playing with the little lego like dolls and the wooden animals. I also bought her some soft balls for in the house so she can toss them about without breaking things. We also bought the cheap igloo play tent from Ikea, which she Adores! I hide toys in there for her to find when I know we're going to spend time indoors.
I also make up a play box with new things every once in a while and leave it for her to find in the living room. (taking away some toys and reintroducing them as they suggest, but I also throw in 'new' things like food packets I've taped up for her to play with, and odd bits like thread reels, gigantic buttons, junk/costume jewelry -necklaces, watches etc. which I've picked up for pennies from charity shops)

Things that have lots of buttons that make a sound or play a song when dc press them are best for this age imo.Keep them occupied for long.

I really struggle with this too, but find that DS's (16 months) little garage with lots of cars on it keeps him amused playing on his own for a bit (if it's a good day!)... He also loves cars that whizz along - especially his Postman Pat van.

DS is 15 months. He loves playing with balls. He has a bag full of balls of different shapes and sizes. He throws and catches, well intercepts really. He also likes to dribble a football.

He has a cupboard in the kitchen full of tupperware and other plastic items. He loves getting things out and putting them back in.

Other favourites are shape sorters, megablocks, trucks, a ride-on toy

Most of all though he loves playing with DH and I. We play with his toys with him, chase him round the house, lift him up to the ceiling then drop him to the floor (in a controlled way obviously!), look at books (he's not really interested in the story at the moment but likes the pictures) that kind of thing

Sorting washing is a great favourite with us (also 16 months). He's just starting to tell me sometimes that something is Papa's (he's German - not Victorian!) or mine. But clothes in and out of the clothes basket can keep him busy for a long time. The bath with some cups for pouring is another one which can keep us going for hours. In terms of actual bought toys, we also have a Postman Pat van which whizzes across the floor which he loves pushing(sounds the same as Deaconwood's). He's also just starting to get quite interested in his sister's dolls... Apart from that, the wooden train track with a bridge is a big hit. He spends ages fitting two pieces of train track together (with great concentration) and then letting a train carriage roll down the hump backed bridge.

My dd is just 17 months and her favourite things are her brother's wooden Thomas the Tank Engine trains (which she likes to push across the floor shouting "Toot! Toot!" and her colour magna-doodle and/or chunky pencils and paper (both keep her quiet for ages in her high-chair while I'm cooking). She actually sat quietly with a pad and some colour pencils all the way through a whole meeting at my ds's school this week.

She has also just started to get interested in play cups/saucers/cutlery and food and she loves to roll, throw and kick a ball.

Her other favourite activity is emptying the spice drawer and plastic/tupperware cuboard in the kitchen and she's, just started piling things into her wooden baby-walker truck thing and taking them for a walk (can be anything, clothes, shoes, books, toys etc).

I think her absolute favourite is books though. She has a little shelf full of them and spends hours pulling them off the shelf and sitting in a pile of them. She particularly likes lift-the-flap type books at the moment. She also loves being read to and brings me a constant stream of books to read.
