Full time Access and part time work?

Has anyone managed to do both?

I work 12 hours per week but often work more hours to cover sickness etc. I'm supposed to be starting Access part time in September. Would I be mad to consider doing full time Access?

Hey,

I did a full time access course and worked between 16 to 30 hours a week. Its all about time management!

I would like to add I did not have ds at this point though.

Good luck

Wow! That's impressive!

I do have DC's they're all at school.

Hmmmm....maybe I could do it then. Thank you!

I have just completed an access course. Working whilst doing it will be very hard work but as long as you are disciplined with time management you will be fine!

Well done on completing your course Did you do it in one year?

I'm going to be starting an access to nursing course full-time in sept also, already volunteer and will be starting part-time evening work soon.. eee gads, writing it all down makes me want to run and hide lol.

This has been a bit of a concern to me with thoughts of 'will I end up in a straight jacket before christmas comes' . Have been told though, as others have said, it is all about time management and to take the occassional moment out (when possible) for a breather so that you can refill the batteries so to speak and remember why you started the process in the first place .

Good luck on your course, what are you studying?

onadietcokebreak · 22/06/2010 18:23

Yes I completed it in a year.

I work one day a week doing voluntary work and also was a single parent when I started the course. My partner has now moved in and I have been trying to get to grips with step parenting his children. Not easy!

Menetta...be careful not to overcommit yourself. Evenings were went I had to study and some evenings I would cry because I was so tired.

menetta · 23/06/2010 17:04

I know what you mean about overcommiting, however there is little choice in the matter as far as the working side the jobcentre require me to be working as soon as possible as my youngest is now 7 (even though am about to become a full-time student and have worked right up until mid last year when I was made redundant - go figure lol).

Am hoping not, but kinda already know that something will have to give, but am determined it won't be the course.. Thankfully I also have the best support/childcare system ever (which I know so many don't) my mum , the man in my life isn't half bad either bless him.. Just have to teach him to cook and will be sorted .

onadietcokebreak · 25/06/2010 19:20

Menetta....are you on income support as a lone parent? If not ignore this but if you are.....have you spoken to your lone parent advisor? I think you may have been given some wrong advice!

You should be okay to say on Income Support whilst you are studying...the age 7 rule only appply to new claims from Oct and exisiting claims will be converted soon but gradually and claimants who are undertaking a course of study are able to complete it.

Please dont think you have to start PT work.. you do not have to at this stage and it may actually not be beneficial for you at this time because of the course.

Thanks onadietcokebreak, I do receive IS currently and have been in regular contact with my LPA, she is pretty good thankfully and completely disagrees with me 'having' to work at the same time as doing all the rest so is trying to find out if I won't need to, as it might become a problem as she says I am trying to do something for the long-term future etc .

Spoke to her yesterday funnily enough to inform her of registration and she said that she has basically put down that I am already a full time student and as I haven't received any offical dating notification she doesn't believe I will, so am now to relax and not panic and only get a job when I feel it is necessary to my situation if you know what I mean (monetary, experience, course requirement etc etc). As terrible as it sounds in some ways and maybe to some I think I am going to simply do that as the course has a lot crammed into it over 3 full days and is very full-on.

onadietcokebreak · 02/07/2010 09:19

I completely understand! Dont overcommit yourself! I did and was knackered!

However nursing places are very competetive for uni....try and get some relevant experience, even voluntarily, before you start course if you havent already got some.

menetta · 03/07/2010 08:44

I have a voluntary place on ward at my local hospital (wooohooo to me lol), and the best bit is interacting with adult patients as I am hoping to go into adult nursing.

Tbh, I am a tad relieved I can put the working side onto the back burner for a while, as really want to be able to put all I can into this part of the course. As you say places are really competetive then there is the daily routine with family and house etc etc.

Thanks for the advice, and sorry for kind of hijacking your thread a little bit there Margeaux

Margeaux · 04/07/2010 09:58

No problem at all

I'm glad to hear you don't have to jump through hoops to get yourself an education. Good luck with your course....I'm sure you'll love it now you can concentrate on studying

Ooops...meant to say, I think I'm going to stick with p/t. With 4 DC's and a part time job I don't think I'd manage with f/t access - I'm a bit of a lightweight Still, the time will soon go.

OP posts:
menetta · 11/07/2010 10:11

Not a lightweight at all, putting the priorities in order methinks . Good luck to you also.

Can't wait to begin properly.
