a friend has told me that she is not sure if it is safe to use sun cream in such a small baby, i think it is but got me wondering now, nhs website not a big help in the subjet.
how young were your children when you started putting cream on them?? am i doing wrong by using the cream?

all help appreciated and many thanks.

Green People do an organic children's suncream which I used on ds1 when he was 4 months old and we were in France.

Sorry for resurrecting a zombie thread, but I came here via Google and really just wondered if anyone had come across a sun cream for tiny babies since this discussion? We're going on hols soon (UK) and, on the off chance of good weather, I'd like a cream for my month old DD. Obviously she'll be covered up and in shade, but she'll probably still get some exposure when BF etc. and I really don't want her to burn.

Here in Australia people just cover their babies and pushchairs with muslin. And hats of course when they are out of their pram.

no need for suncream if they are in the shade , i never used it as i didnt want to use a load of chemicals on their skin.

Green people do an organic babies suncream, no nasties in it. I'm not sure what age it's suitable from as I didn't use it until my DD was almost 1. She was born in May so the first summer I kept her out of the sun in her carrycot, and sat in the shade to BF with her hat on, muslin over her. Also dressed her I'm very light cotton clothes with long sleeves/legs.

Thanks all. Am slightly concerned about exposure even in shade (pale types here, DS and I have been known to burn on overcast days!) so will have a look at the green people website now. We have parasol/ long sleeves/ floppy sunhats etc. lined up, and I'll get a uv tent thing, but still would like something to pop on her hands. I don't really want to spend my holiday indoors if the weather is even a little bit good!

TEMPERATURE DOES NOT MATTER. How long before people get this?

It is June. Sun's rays are strong. Take precautions.

hope people this ignorant about science don't take their kids skiing. Because it isn't hot up a mountain so no-one needs suncream, right?

Erm, what's your point specialsubject? I don't think anyone had suggested otherwise, unless I'm missing something here?

It's because I'm well aware of how much damage sun exposure can do that I'm thinking about how to protect DD if the weather turns out to be good enough to be outside.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 30/06/2013 20:29

Would a big hat and a baby for not do the job? Can't say either of mine ever caught the sun and I never used sunscreen.

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 30/06/2013 20:29

Baby gro!

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 01/07/2013 15:43

I suppose I'm just wondering about the bits I might have less success covering up completely, like hands. DD isn't used to feeding under a muslin, I tried it yesterday and she got all fussy as I usually BF discreetly without one! I've ordered a uv tent for the beach which I'm hoping is big enough for us both to fit in....

MrsHuxtable · 01/07/2013 23:09

No suncreen under 6 months, it's full of crap. Just keep baby in the shade.

MrsHuxtable · 01/07/2013 23:11

And yes to Greenpeople, it's what we used once DD was old enough and it smells neutral,
