Changing nurseries - worried about impact on DS

DS is 17 months and settled in well at his current nursery which he's been attending for 7 months now (2 days per week). We need to move house however, and have found a great nursery in area we will move to. As usual, I am worried about how DS will adjust to a new nursery and feel really guilty for having to take him out of the old one. DH said that now is the best time as he's still too young to have proper friends and will settle in at the new one and make friends there as he gets older - and will likely go to the same school as is a small town.

I'm more worried about the attachment he has made with the key workers at his current nursery. I can't stop feeling crappy about it. Anyone been in a similar situation that can make me feel abit more confident about the move? Thanks

DD changed nurseries at aged 2. Our choice as she moved to a better nursery. We prepared her for it, she did some settling in sessions while at the other nursery, and she looked forward to it as a consequence. She did not seem to miss the other nursery at all, but has good memories, when we drive past it she points it out and says happily 'my old nursery is there'

Children that age are very adaptable and deal with change well, even if it appears they do not in the very short term. It is us adults that have the problem, we put our adult fears onto the children. But they just do not deal with change the way we do.

A friend's DD changed nursery at 3 after one term; her mother was worried as you are, but within a week her DD had settled in and was loving it.

Don't worry - your DS will be fine, especially if you don't give off any anxious signals about the change in nursery.

Maybe you can take him there the day before he starts so that he can see what it's like and you can spend some time introducing him to his new keyworkers.

Thanks Woodland. I was thinking that perhaps we would take DS out of the old nursery then have a 2 week holiday or something then put him in the new one (starting with settling in of course). But, you are right, it's my adult fear not his.

Thank you
