Vests to go over reusable nappies

Hi all,

Can anyone please recommend baby vests which go well over big-ish bum on cloth bottomed babies? I'm aware of Frugi and cut-4-cloth and had a few of these vests in smaller sizes, but they're quite a bit more expensive than high street, also I'd rather have sleeveless vests for summer time and Cut-4-cloth all seem to have envelope necks and short/long sleeves. Most of my baby clothes were bought 5 years ago for my DC1, my DC2 has just grown out of some Asda vests which were pretty good (not to wide so by sizing up for longer length they still fit around the torso), so I put him in our next size up which happen to be Sainsbury's Tu, they are so wide he's pretty much falling out the neck hole, and they're not much longer than the smaller size Asda ones. I suppose what I'm looking for is something which is long, and narrow but still has enough stretch or shape to get a big nappy bottom in. Any ideas?

Oh, I should probably say that we don't live near an Asda, otherwise I could try to buy the same type as before. also I'm thinking that i the past 5 years since I last bought baby vests the style and cut of any particular brand may have changed.

I bought some vests for ds1 which were sleeveless from Boots. They were cut slightly differently to most vest in the bottom area which meant they covered cloth nappies very well. I used them for ds2 as well so they lasted and kept their shape, but I did buy them 4 years ago. I will see if I can find a link. They were Boots own, not Mini Mode.

I found tesco disney vests tended to be good for going over cloth. What size are you after?

I don't believe it. It's these ones here which are a bargain at £2.50. Unfortunatly they don't have them in the size my ds2 needs or I would be buying some.minimode.co.uk/baby-unisex-5-pack-of-white-sleeveless-bodysuits

Great, thanks for your ideas. I'm looking for 6-9 months, DS is only 4 months but is pretty big anyway (17lb ish), he's pretty much grown out of all of our 3-6 month vests (Asda, and M&S).

I've noticed on the continent that there is no 6-9 month then 9-12month size clothing, most mainland european clothing just have 6-12 months. I recall that there wasn't much difference between the two sizes anyway. Maybe I could skip the 6-9 months and go straight for 9 - 12? I guess it would depend on the brand.

Thanks again!

terrynappies.co.uk sell vest extenders- extra bits that you popper in at the bottom. I use these and it makes them fit much better and avoids the huge neck hole problem. You could make them quite easily if you are crafty I think.

I think you probably could jump a size. I have with ds2. He's got some vests which are age 12-18 months, that he's been wearing since 7 months (and he's not big) and they still fit him now at 18 months.

Next
Mothercare
Pumpkin Patch

All have generous sizing - DD (18 weeks) is terried and has only just grown out of the mothercare newborn sleepsuits

you could try what i do. i buy 18-24 month child vests (ie not poppered) wash them at 90 or tumble them on hot and they shrink to fit perfectly, and you dont have the problems with trying to popper them under huge nappies

or do without? my ds is coming up to one, and hasnt worn a vest since he was 8 months, i just double up his tshirts.

I used either sleeveless vests in the next size up but mainly did the non poppering vests or going without route - made the changing quicker!

You can also buy vest extenders and I used them too.

LittlePants · 15/06/2010 17:35

I saw some vest extenders on ebay the other day. May be worth looking there. They're great anyway, as they fit any size vest, so you can keep using them even when you move up a vest size
