Any tips Changin the nappy of a wriggling 1yo

Does anyone have any top tips for changing the nappy of a rolling, crawling, walking 1yo girl? I cannot get her to lie or stand still for a couple of seconds to get her nappy changed. Dirty nappies are clearly the most difficult to deal with, it's a nightmare! I've tried distracting with singing, toys, chatting, funny faces/noises etc etc all she wants to do as soon as I lie her down is roll, then crawl, the get up to walk! Standing up she tries to sit down or walk off aaargh!!!

My ds1 was the same and ds2 has just started. My top tip is stickers. Buy a pack of cheapo stickers and when it's nappy time, stick one on her arm/hand/face/wherever and hopefully she'll be so distracted trying to get it off, she will be still for a few seconds. SWorks a treat on mine and other lo's whose nappies I've had the joys of changing.

I give my DD something to hold, or ask her 'where's's the light?' or sing a silly song.
Like the sticker idea.

Thanks, like sticker idea, I'll get some today. Unfortunately where's the light etc doesn't work, but thanks for the suggestion.

My dd2 has just learnt the action to twinkle twinkle little star, so at the moment I an singing this at every change as doining the actions keeps her bussy

Have you tried changing her on your knee? I did this with all my kids and found it so much easier than putting them on a changing mat.

It takes a few tries to get used to it but it means you have one arm free to hold them while the other hand does the changing. It also means there is nowhere for them to roll to. Also handy for when you are out and about and their are no baby changing facilities.

i do ds' nappy standing up (him that is!). works a bit better than lying down but have to watch that he doesn't try to sit down!

I ended up just hanging onto one foot for dear life and doing everything else one-handed. But quite often I could get him to play with something or join in with "if you need a nappy and you know it clap your hands"...

I mostly gave up using 2-piece nappies though and invested in more pocket ones.

This might be a bit extreme but it works - top tip from my mum for dealing with major toddler tantrums at changing time.

Change her on the floor rather than on a changing table and straddle yourself over the top of her facing the opposite way to usual ie: so you're doing it upside down. If she's a real wriggler you can pin her arms inside your legs. If she starts complaining, you gently lower your bottom towards her face... I've only used it on 2 or 3 occasions when DD was in utter meltdown and it bloody works, plus you get it over and done with quickly and then you can get on with doing something more fun

Find something distracting and unusual for them to hold while being changed. A calculator works for us atm!

makeupmummy · 09/06/2010 14:50

been there! I switched to those easy up type nappies that are more like pants, no fiddling about trying to hold them together and do them up, we found it much easier!

A 'Rabbitts' changing mat. We got one for ds at about that age and it is brilliant!

I got mine here

BustleInYourHedgerow · 09/06/2010 15:15

Like the rabbitts changing mat but I seriously can't afford it....DS is the same, driving me nuts! He is only 10mo but crawling, walking and everything else! Tried the changing on my knee thing after seeing my Granny doing it but he is one strong baby! Ended up with poo jeans. Nice.

Think I will try again later on when he wakes up from his nap...

I save a 'forbidden' item (car keys, mobile, remote control for the tele etc) and allow my DD to hold it only at nappy change time. It tends to focus her attention and stop her from trying to leg it, at least for a minute or 2- so you have to be super quick!

LarkinSky · 10/06/2010 13:36

You've just reminded me that I went through this with dd, only 3/4 months ago, and I've already forgotten.

So... it will pass, is my advice. I dealt with it by lining the side of her changing mat with interesting (and also 'forbidden') items to keep her hands busy. Usually my mobile phone did the trick. It's worth it, and will probably only last a few weeks before she gives up the fight.

Oh, and while you're doing a super-quick nappy change, just get the thing off, bum clean, fling new one on anyhow - you can adjust the velcro tabs once your dd is standing up again.

My friend learnt the fine art of nappy changing while her dc were standing up, but I never could master that one.

Good luck!

Have I commented ' sit on her' yet?
My 13-month old is a wriggle bum, I give him a book, sing a son, put my leg over his tummy and hold him down while the nappy is changed. Nowadays I do let him stand up while I cream his bum and pop on the walker nappy.
