When and how to tackle night training?

Ds is 3.4 and has been clean and dry since 2.5. However, he still wears a pull up at night nad it is full of wee every morning. He is no where near being dry.

I know he is lazy, and as soon as his pull up goes on he'll wee in it instead of going to the toilet. Should his bladder be able to go through the night now?

My SIL lifted both of her kids at 10.30pm to encourage them to be dry at night time and taht seemed to work for them.

Any advice?

plenty of children are still in nappies at night at 5 or older (I know some 6 yos).
it does seem to vary - ds1 was dry reliably in the day by 3 but was over 4 before we got a week of dry nights.
Lifting made no difference - sometimes he weed and was still wet, sometimes not and was dry etc, so I stopped it.
DD otoh was dry and clean at 2.6, a matter of weeks (maybe a couple of months) later she was getting up to take her nappy off and wee in her potty; after about a week of that we left the nappy off and have never looked back.
top info from bundle!
my top tip is to cut out juice and squash after about 4pm (give plenty of milk or water tho); ds1 always had his worst accidnets after late-night ribena (usually at a party - i don't have it in the house for this reason!)

Northerner - as you know your DS and my DD are same age.

DD has been dry since 24 months during the day. We thought we were well on way to her being dry at night a couple of months ago too - went nearly two weeks, and then it all went wrong. I tried lifting (well, I did wake her to go) and it made no difference. Dd doesn't seem to go to the toilet during the day that much, but seems to make up for it at night.

I have decided to leave it a while and try again in a mionth or so and see how we go. DD is keen to be dry at night, and is wanting to try but I just don't think she is ready.

Day time training was a doddle with her, so I really do feel that this si a genuine not being ready, rather than anything else.

A couple of weeks after dd was dry in the day, I just asked her one night if she wanted a nappy on and she said no so I just put a care mat under the sheet (it just curls up if you put it on top). She did have accidents a few times but was mostly dry. I started putting 1 sheet, then care mat then another sheet so if she did wet in the middle of the night i could just take off the top sheet and leave the dry one underneath to save too much disruption.

aargh ... dd has refused point blank to wear a pull up tonight.

She had a phase of being dry overnight a few weeks back but recently has been sodden. Had promised she could have a go once we'd moved but things are still so haphazard we're not really well prepared. Found a care mat for the bed at least.

Wish us luck !!

Update... she did it !!! At least, she woke at 4.30 having lost her teddy and dh took her to the toilet then just in case . She is thrilled !!!!

Well, on Saturday night I made I actually forgot to put a pull up on him, and he woke up dry! I couldn't believe it. He weed on Monday morning, just as he was waking, but he was dry again this morning. So I am sticking with it.

However, we are moving house next week, so my timimng is not great.......

good news Northerner! Know the feeling though. We've just got moving out of the way but dd starts school in September and just hope she doesn't relapse then. Still got a caremat on the bed but it wrinkles up as she moves around in her sleep.

northerner · 16/08/2005 12:06

OOh not thought of a care mat. He's got a plastic sheet so would I need a care mat too?

She has a fitted mattress protector underneath her normal sheet but I just thought that putting the care mat on too would mean that if she does have a mishap we wouldn't have to change the whole bed in the middle of the night, hopefully. If she is still reliable by the end of the week then we'll probably leave it off. ds night trained at a similar age and has very rarely had an accident.

LIZS · 17/08/2005 09:02

oops. Bit of an accident last night, she and care mat were a little damp this morning, but we hadn't insisted she went before getting into bed as she had been less than an hour before. We'll learn !!

Another dry night for my ds

just for everyone's info, you can get special pampers bed mats with little wings that tuck around the mattress. They are super absorbent - I know ds has practically emptied his huge bladder on one and it's not made the mattress damp at all. You can get them in chemists and big supermarkets. I know they are more expensive per mat than the care mats but they cover a large area and we found them useful because ds used to roll all over the bed and sometimes miss the smaller mat.
