Potty training diary

Decided to keep my own diary on this as I don't want to monopolise anyone else's thread but I do feel the need to off load somewhere!

Ds3 is 2.6 and on day 2/3 (depending on whether you count Sunday) of potty training.

Yesterday, he spent all day bare bottomed and in the garden and never once used the potty.

Today: I am not feeling too good - tired, headache, bit woozy at times - so not in the best mood for doing this, but I can't stop just because I don't feel up to it, can I?

Ds3 had a good sit on the potty at the start of today but did nothing.

Then wet one pair of pants.

I decided to rope in the help of three older siblings, but they just wound ds3 up and made him silly. He started hitting them. I lost my rag and slapped his leg (I know, that doesn't teach him not to hit, but this is the warts and all potty training diary - this is how it really is behind many people's closed doors). Ds3 promptly starting howling and then wet himself again but ds2, with great presence of mind, whipped ds3 onto the potty - just didn't take his pants off first! The result: another pair of wet pants but a tiny dribble of wee in potty too - the first time!

Felt obliged to give ds3 a choccie button as there was some wee in the potty. I have been promising choccie buttons for days now and I think if he finally gets the reward, even though the wee in the potty was really accidental, he might stsrt to get the idea. So, he got his button and I am now awaiting the next development.

I really feel too tired and lazy to do this though!

Muminlondon, about your comment about leaving your dd in knickers when at home - yes, that is what I do. Ds3 can get his pants on and off quite well, but the only two occasions he has worn trousers these last few days, he flooded them. It is almost as if he equates wearing trousers with being in a nappy.

Going to Cornwall for a fortnight on Friday. I just feel the whole thing is going to degenerate into a fiasco. I mean, do you really think I am going to take a potty to the beach? Ds3 will just run around starkers for a fortnight doing his business unrestricted as and when he pleases.

Why do you say a trip to the beach works wonders?

Well, I have decided that he only needs to be dry for a couple of hours in the afternoon 2 days a week (his playgroup hours) and he doesn't start until 12th September, so I am trying not to get too stressed about it. But he is definitely not getting it as quickly as his siblings - but he is younger so I suppose that is inevitable.

The horror though is that playgroup want him toilet trained, not potty trained! I quote:

"Toilet trained" means that the child is relatively happy using the toilet independently and is confident and able to let the staff know when he/she needs the toilet.

DS3? Any of the above? No way!

That's really expecting a lot isn't it? I've read that nearly 1 in 4 three year olds still have regular accidents during the day, and 1 in 10 four year olds. Do kids that age even know when they are specifically tired, hungry or thirsty (apart from general whingeing), let alone that they need the toilet?

muminlondon · 17/08/2005 12:38

'regular' meaning more than once a week.

Lonelymum · 17/08/2005 15:16

I think it is asking too much too, but I have nearly a month to go before he starts and he is only there 2 hours at a time, so hopefully, he won't have accidents every time!

Agree-company excluded,eh?!

Lonelymum · 18/08/2005 20:13

Checking in as away for two weeks from tomorrow.

Better today: poo in garden (at least not in pants) one or two (I forget) wees in pants and 4 wees in potty including two he did by himself (ie not forced on to pot).

Thanks for the support anyone has given me here. It helped to keep me going knowing I would have to report in!

If I can find this thread again in a fortnight, I will report in again although I am not sure
he will make much progress on the beach.
