Has anyone else been offered or know someone who has been offered a private midwife. Its a new thing the government has brought out, apparently they have them in america and the prime minister, was very intrested, and so they are doing a 2 year trial.

my daughter has been picked,as at the moment they are picking certain women aged 19 and under. The midwife comes to the house every week, and has a chat and my daughter fills in questionaires et.

the midwife was lovely, she brought a knitted womb with a doll inside, with a placenta and cord attached,it was hysterical, also a pelvis, this was bone/plastic.and all very intresting..

Its a 2 year study, and you end up with a folder which will be full by the time the child is 2..

so was just wondering, has anyone else heard of this ?

I think this is called the Family Nurse Partnership. It is aimed at young parents, becuase they amy be more disadvantaged.

It aims to improve outcomes for these families. It is not a private midwife as such, the FNP workers are all nurses from different backgrounds, some are HV's, some midwives, some mental health workers.

It can be a really good scheme and provides a lot of support. Your daughter is lucky to be on it!

the woman she has is a midwife, but said she wont be examing my daughter, but they can listen in to the baby now and again,if she wants her to,which i thought was nice.

also when she has the baby she wont have a health visitor, this woman will carry on coming,if it works out all women will end up recieving this help.

It's a great service and should be available to all women. IMUK (Independent Midwives UK) are currently working with many PCTs to try and implement this as an option for more women and there is a bit about this hereShould just point out that this is nothing to do with the FNP as mentioned by Fleegle.

lilmamma, is your daughter having her midwivery care from someone else then? Just a bit confused if the HCP is a midwife but not providing antenatal care. I am guessing she is now a HV who was a midwife in the past.

curlywurlycremeegg · 05/06/2010 20:03

midwifery of course

lilmamma · 05/06/2010 20:11

tbh,im not 100% sure of the whole thing.the woman is only young, maybe 25ish and is a trained midwife,my daughter will still go to the gp midwife, and to the hospital for her scans etc,and then this midwife comes each week.I will find out more from her next week.

I think this is the FNP. It is a two year programme of intensive visiting.

If it was private/independant midwifery then they would be delivering the midwifery care and prob not visiting for 2 years.

it is called building blocks,in her group she will receieve usual care from the nhs maternity and child health services, but will have additional home visits, from specailly trained nurses/midwives,these take place throughout the pregnancy, and until the baby is 2.

they aim to recruit 2,400 first time mums.the results of this research will help the government decide the best way to support, young mothers during pregnancy and in the early years of a new babys life.

Sorry Fleegle, my post reads badly, what I meant to say was the midwifery model is not up and running yet so what you described (the FNP) sounds correct. I just wanted to highlight the IMUK case. I am just slightly confused as to what help a midwife visiting will be when the baby is more that 4-6 months old as I have absolutly no professional knowledge (as a midwife) of babies over that age. Have they had extrs training?

x posted with lilmamma, thanks for that info, it clears things up a bit

Again i dont know any more than what we have been told, she said she will come at least 50 times omg....so thats wednesdays mornings out the window for a while haha..

must admit she was very intresting and gave my daughter lots of advice and we did have a laugh..she put my daughter at ease over a lot of things, she has a needle phobia, and worrying incase the after birth gets stuck, etc, and she was so helpfull,so hopefully she will be a great asset as she has the time to answer all her worries in the comfort of our home couldnt ask for more..
