Pop-in nappies - any opinions?

I have some motherease sandies and rikki wraps left over from DS1, DC2 hasn't arrived yet. I've just recieved a trial one of these (the bamboo version) - does anyone else use them? They look very nice, and feel so soft. Are there any advantages to having the dream-dri ones?

It seems like you have to use a new wrap with every nappy change - is that the case? I know with the motherease I could use one wrap for every 3-4 changes. Obviously buying a new wrap per nappy is going to push up the cost quite a bit, can you re-use the wrap bit?

Also - do they really fir from birth to toddler??

Thanks

I have pop-ins, both bamboo and dream-dri, but must admit I don't use them unless desperate. I guess you could reuse the shell. I don't as I find unpoppering the wee soaked pads really unpleasant, yet that doesn't bother me on other nappies like ittis.

I don't think mine will fit much longer but I have a chunky 8 month old and they may suit leaner babies better.

On the plus side the dream-dri does indeed dry dreamily! Quickest of any nappy I've tried.

Thanks Chutes - why don't you use them unless desperate? I was hoping all my prayers had been answered and I wouldn't need to look at any more brands (am feeling slightly overwhelmed with the choice...)!

They're just too bulky and fussy for me. Also DP and I nearly came to blows over the use of the night booster and that tainted them a bit. Still not entirely sure what to do with the booster and I watched youtube videos about it and everything

I love my bumgeniuses atm, have you tried them? I get nearly all my nappies second hand from here that way I've tried loads quite cheaply.

ARbaby · 31/05/2010 00:28

I use the dream-dri on my 2 month old. Advantages: They dry very quickly. The nappies come in one complete 3 piece unit so you take off the whole nappy inc. wrap. So you wouldn't need to re-use the wrap. I daren't use them at night because the boosters are too bulky for a small baby and without they would definately not last til morning. Instead I use stretchies or a terry with a fleece wrap. I like the dream-dri for convienience but I would regret buying them if I hadn't used my healthy eating grant to pay for them. This is because I think with the right wrap and fleece liner a terry is hard to beat in my limited experience.

Sigh... ok, I can see I'm going to have to do more research. I had read that bumgeniuses tend to leak?! Thanks for the link to that website though Chutes, everyone seems to speak in acronyms there but it's a good place to start.

ARbaby - any recs for the 'right wrap and fleece'? Do you mean just a folded terry square, like a proper old-fashioned nappy?

Thanks again.

hi Skink,

I find the pop-ins a bit of a bother and rather bulky for a small baby (4mths), I might use them more as she gets bigger. Useful to have a few in the stash as an ultra-quick drying turnaround option, but I wouldn't go for them as a main nappy.

If you want a nappy that you can re-use the wrap and just change inserts then maybe consider the Bumgenious flip? I reckon you probably need about 7 wraps and about 20 inserts (washing every 2-3 days), and it's birth to potty (well, probably a 3month old to potty) which makes it very cost-efficient. I've been very happy with mine so far. though not quite as quick drying as the pop-ins they are reasonably quick-drying.

I use them (both bamboo and dream dri) and really like them. Yes, they are a bit bulky but we find them very reliable because of the gusset. Bum genius seem to be the favoured nappy for a one part birth to potty but they leak like anything on our daughter - probably just her shape or something!

We used them from 3 weeks, I tend now to use them in the daytime along with one-life two parters (basically the same as the motherease one size) and bumbles at night (a shaped terry nappy with a separate wrap). DD is now 4mths old. I was using a bamboo pop-in at night on her until a few weeks ago but then we had a few leaks - I think she has probably changed shape a bit as she's grown as the nappy wasn't saturated.

The bamboo pop-ins are more absorbent but take ages to dry, the dream dri are practically dry straight out of the wash. I would't recommend the bamboo as your only nappy unless you're prepared to tumble dry. Dream dri aren't absorbent for us at night without the booster so I only ever use during the day but they are fab for days when the weather is awful and you can't get anything dry!

I don't re-use the wraps on the pop-ins.

I have one of the original bamboo pop in nappies and 6 of the dream dri ones. I use the bamboo one but I don't really like it as the wetness stays next to the skin of the baby. With the dream dri the wetness is wicked away to the fleece part. Also the drying issue - the bamboo insert takes ages to dry and the dream dri as very, very quick to dry.
In terms of size I have a very large 3m who is wearing the pop-ins and a 26m who could fit them but I prefer to keep them for the younger one. I use BG v3 as my staple pocket nappy and they fit both my DC.
I don't use cloth nappies at night but can't imagine the dream dri would be absorbant enough for night time use.
I would definitely change the entire nappy after use, it's not the same as using a motherease wrap.
I do like the dream dri ones though

I found the outer of mine pilled and faded despite not using detergent. I also found it leaked frequently. I was not impressed and sold mine on ebay. It was a dream dri.
