I feel terrible I am such an idiot - ds has been wearing too small shoes

and it looks his toes may have been damaged.
I thought they fit him. I am in bits. I took him to get measured and his shoes were way too small and now when I looked at his toes after his bath his little toes and the ones next to them have bent slightly inwards.
What a stupid f**ing idiot I am.
I will take him to the drs tomorrow.
Does anyone know anything about this? Will we be able to do anything?
I am so ashamed.

stop don't panic!
I'vedone this too and I'msure most people have!!!
No need to take him to the Drs - honestly. Just pop him in his new shoes and let him walk around without them at home and then look again in a month - they'll be sorted

stottiecake · 26/05/2010 21:36

I love you!
Are you sure??
Relief!

I'm sure it will be fine, but I would def. let him go barefoot at home as much as possible so that he's got maximum wiggle room

The best thing for little feet is to be bear AFAIK.

So now the weather is getting warmer, just let him run around barefoot as much as possible. His feet will sort themselves out as they grow.

And make sure if his feet have gone up a sock size that he has new socks too as too tight socks can be just as damaging as too tight shoes.

It's an easy mistake to make. I'm sure he'll be fine.

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 21:41

i am sure he'll be fine, are you certain his toes weren't always like that??

how long has he had the shoes for? it is true that shoes too small/tight can damage little feet, but he would need to be wearing them quite a lot, for a long period of time for it to happen

BrownPaperandString · 26/05/2010 21:43

Honestly, he will be fine.
What size was he in and what size shoul he have been in and how old is he?
Are you brave enough to fess up??

stottiecake · 26/05/2010 21:48

Yes new socks will get asap. And wil make sure he goes barefoot wherever poss.
Have just been through his baby grows (he wears for bed) and put away the ones that are a perfect fit and left the roomy ones.
Gah. Such an idiot.
Thanks for all replies. I really appreciate it!

OMG do I have to say
I can't believe I have been so shite.
He was in a size 5 and he is actually
6 and a half
cringe
he's only 18 mo.
I thought they were ok, I mean I 'checked' them. His foot went in easily.I had no idea. I was given 2nd hand clark shoes from a good friend and had estimated his size.
Like I said I am a bloody idiot

If you go to the Startrite website, I think you can buy foot measuring guides.

Can probably get them from ebay too

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 21:56

oh no, quite a jump then! still, at least he has new ones now. I used to work in clarks and people would sometimes come in with children in shoes 2 sizes too small- inc one woman because "they're the only one's he'll wear"

Meglet · 26/05/2010 21:57

Don't panic. Lots of bare feet, even in the garden and some correct size socks and I'm sure he will be fine.

JaxTellersOldLady · 26/05/2010 21:59

dont worry OP, his feet will be fine! Honestly.

When they are little you need to get them measured every month or so, get yourself a foot measure and check for yourself.

I know - a massive jump! My chin hit the floor when the lady told me.
She had a look at his toes and said they looked ok but I think she could see I was hyperventilating and was being kind.
I genuinely thought she was going to say ooh he's a five and a half.
Shocking.
I'm also upset as he was probably really uncomfortable.
Thanks for telling me there is someone worse than me!!
Will defo look at the website for a foot measuring guide but I think I will be a regular at clarks now (lady said come back every 4 weeks for a measure)

i think that a childs shoe that fits has about 1cm of growing room left.

So he may not have been that uncomfortable. He might only just have reached the end.

Was the width OK?

BrownPaperandString · 26/05/2010 22:11

oh don't worry honestly - the shoes are given with enough room to fit a whole thumb width at the top which gives ample growing room, so the new ones are actually too big strictly speaking but not too big that he can't walk properly etc. so, the old ones though may have been a bit tight are probably just border line for him, particularly as you could get them on really easily.

DD was in size 7 and measured at 8.5 (same brand) and the lovely shop assistent was shocked. I asked her to put the old ones on herself and check them on DDs feet and see what she thought and she had to admit that they did seem totally fine on her. DD continued in the size 7 for another 3-4 weeks I think and they really were genuinely ok.

deleting · 26/05/2010 22:11

I'm sure if they were way too tight you would have noticed when you put them on him and it would have felt like you had to cram his feet in. I'm sure his feet will be fine and some shoe makes come up bigger so he may have had quite a bit of growing room.

stottiecake · 26/05/2010 22:15

I think so. Am not sure.
They did look huge for a while. I thought he was probably just about needing some new ones.
Gah.

OP posts:
GoldenSnitch · 26/05/2010 22:19

Plus, pre-worn shoes would have been stretched a bit and so may have been bigger than a 5.

My DS wore his last pair of shoes for about 6 months despite me getting them checked regularly (every 4-6 weeks usually) - then went up a whole size when he did need new ones. His old shoes had stretched as he wore them so were big enough even though they technically weren't IYSWIM?

The suppleness of baby shoes is part of the reason they worry me. If they've moulded to the first child's feet then they may not necessarily fit my child's feet even though they are the same size. That's why I've always bought new ones.

It's a paranoia passed down to me from my Mum

stottiecake · 26/05/2010 22:22

Yes - I never had to cram - they just slipped on ok - no struggle at all.
They were very soft leather so maybe not too bad.
dh just told me he had some probs with his toes as a tot so maybe am seeing something to do with genetics.
But outer toes definitely look a bit bent in.

OP posts:
stottiecake · 26/05/2010 22:28

I think my mum said that to me (but not recently!!)
I just can't believe I didn't make it a priority to get his feet measured - am a massive worrier but completely overlooked this!

OP posts:
Rebeccaruby · 26/05/2010 22:29

We all know from wearing uncomfortable shoes that you can "wear them in". So they have probably stretched to be the right size over time. He would have told you if he was uncomfortable.

1Littleboy1Bigboy · 30/05/2010 17:12

shoes always have growing room. i had my sons feet measured at clarks and although he had gone up half a size, they said to not bother buying new ones as he still had plenty of growth in the shoe. On the next visit he had gone up another half a size and so i did get new ones then - also the shoes were falling apart!

my only concern in all of this is wearing second hand shoes. My ds1 is under the podiatry clinic as he has flat feet and needs inner soles making and they always advised to never have second hand shoes as they will have moulded to the previous owners feet and will not be a correct or supportive fit for you. They also said to not go for very expensive brands as they often are so "stiff" they hold the foot in a rigid position and don't let it naturally bend. They said cheap leather trainers are best for kids.

doesn't help the guilt factor though that my boys shoes are not from clarks!!
