My 11 month old almost fell off the changing table, quite shaken

I just feel the need to share this horrible experience I am quite shaken

I was changing my 11 month old's nappy and I turned away for a second to grab a nappy (usually I have pampers right next to her but I was using a reusable instead and trying to be environmentally friendly) and out of the corner of my eye just caught her sitting up. She was perched literally right on the edge of her changing table and I caught her without a second to spare. It is quite high and I dread to think.

She is numebr two so I should know better than to turn away from an 11month old even for a second

DD had a changing table on top of her chest of drawers and I always kept the top drawer open in case she fell off. Exactly like you I turned my back to get a nappy and she fell off, straight into the drawer - she broke the drawer but wasn't hurt.

stinkypinky · 26/05/2010 14:03

Ok, big deep breaths... she is not hurt, and perhaps now is the time to start changing her on the floor.

So glad she is ok Give her a big hug, have a cup of tea, and forgive yourself.

stinkypinky · 26/05/2010 14:06

Plumm - oops! I never trusted myself with a changing table/cot top changer for DD1, but have both for DD2. Will learn from your near-misses

Dont know what to say other than, shes ok, you caught her just on time and its understandable that you are shaken just make sure you have nappies and everything else to hand when changing her next time, your not the first and wont be the last to do it...

Dollytwat · 26/05/2010 14:24

Roseability I think it's happened to all of us (who'll admit it), and why I stopped changing on the bed - they can't fall off the flooor!

roseability · 26/05/2010 14:36

Yes think I might change her on the floor, although I find that hurts my back. At least I will make sure everything is to hand. I usually give her a toy so she doesn't wriggle but I was in a rush and having a frought hour!

I am a bit complacent as mine have never been early movers (she only started crawling a few days ago and my ds didn't walk until 17 months) but this has given me a needed wake up call

i'll put my hands up and admit my ds rolled off!

he was fine and only a bit puzzled as to how he got there!

i was VERY VERY relieved to have been so lucky.

i can not change him on the floor as he just rolls off and runs away!

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 26/05/2010 14:56

My 8 month old fell off hers and hit the floor just as I got my hands under her.

Try not to beat yourself up about it. Lots of us do it. It was my second too and I turned to sneeze.

trixie123 · 26/05/2010 16:21

have always changed DS on the floor. nap[pies in the bottom drawer in easy reach. the only thing he does is grab the top and tail bowl and empty over himself occasionally! but relax, if all near misses were actual events there'd be no-one left in one piece!

shushpenfold · 26/05/2010 16:25

I gave up on changing tables after a few months for that very reason - mat on the floor!

scurryfunge · 26/05/2010 16:25

It happened to me, DS rolled off into the nappy box beside the table. The cardboard flaps closed after he landed and he disappeared. He wasn't hurt but I did wonder where he'd gone for a second

thisisyesterday · 26/05/2010 16:36

scurryfunge thqa is hilarious!!

this is why i have always changed nappies on the floor! lol

scurryfunge · 26/05/2010 16:39

Oh yes, from then on....he is 15 years old now and doesn't seem affected by it!

inthesticks · 26/05/2010 16:40

Mine were both early crawlers and I had to pin them down from about 5 months. Always used the floor though.
But I did have a really nasty scare when DS2 was 6 months old. I had carried him upstairs and put him down. Turned to close stairgate as DS1 aged 2 was upstairs with me.
Flip... the baby went right down the stairs, crashing into the bottom stairgate.
There was a heart stopping second of silence then he screamed the place down.
Took him to A&E and he was fine. All my fault though and a narrow escape.
It can happen to anyone.

Shaz10 · 26/05/2010 16:43

I change my son in the cot.

Have rolled him off the sofa though

TurtleAnn · 26/05/2010 18:10

My son got too heavy for a changing table at 9-months and we had to move to the floor. He has been attempting suicidal leaps from furniture since 5-months! he managed to nose dive off the hotel bed at 8-months, unhurt but shook me up.
All I'm saying is, we've all been there and that is the turning point when we start to change on the floor.

mrsflux · 26/05/2010 18:41

What are everyone's top tips for stopping a large wriggly walker being a nightmare to change on the floor?

TurtleAnn · 26/05/2010 19:28

Sit on the floor by the changing mat and place your leg across his belly (lightly just enough to keep him right side up), sing songs, give him the lid of the vaseline to play with (I know this isn't hygenic or edible but it is the only thing that stops him trying to wriggle over nnd if I do this we are done in 30 seconds).

bran · 26/05/2010 19:33

Get a Rabbitts mat if you have a bad back and need to do a higher change.

stinkypinky · 26/05/2010 19:41

I sat on the floor with legs apart and straight, so was encompassing all but the top of the changing mat. Never had a successful escape attempt. It was the only way I could do it without hurting my back anyway.

OP hope you are feeling a bit better now.

chaosisawayoflife · 26/05/2010 19:56

Second the Rabbitts mat! It's great and made my life much easier with my pickle of a dd. I tend not to use the straps anymore as she's 2 and we use pull ups, but still use the mat for changes.

mrsflux · 26/05/2010 20:25

I used a rabbitts thingy at a service station once I think. Ds managed to roll over with it attached to him!!! Think he'd end up wandering round with it on his back like a snail shell.

bran · 26/05/2010 20:33

It wasn't a Rabbitts then mrsflux, there's no way anyone under about 4 yrs old could flip it. DS really tried.

mrsflux · 27/05/2010 08:14

bran maybe it was some cheap copy? What stops the mat sliding around/ moving with the child?
Ds is very strong and very wriggly so wouldn't put it past him tbh!

might have a go at the floor changes with a leg pin.

thisisyesterday · 27/05/2010 10:30

i once left ds2 strapped into a baby chair and came back and found him crawling around with it on his back
