Help my DS has IBS!

Has anyone had any similar problems or an expert that can help me?

My DS had colic as a new born and for 6 weeks of breast feeding was going out of my mind.. he was in pain all of his waking hours. I was given a piece of advice which saved us all and told to try him on Lactose free formula. From that day the colic went

At 4 months I weaned him onto normal formula slowly over a week and had no problems.

But DS is 1 next week and so I made the silly choice of moving him to 1plus milk because my DD at 3 is still on it and saves me buying in 2 different milks. I just swiched him overnight
It ran straight through him and produced terrible nappies! I thought it could be teething and carried on for 3 days on the 1plus.
After 3 days i realised it must be the milk and put him back on his original formula.
However it is now 5 days later and he he is the same. He has no signs of discomfort and eating and drinking normally but every bottle just runs straight through him.
What should I do? I can't offer him no milk.

I live overseas and our doctor is crap.. He has tried to give him anti biotics for every aliment he or my DD have ever had. He even gave me 8 differnet meds for a mild food posioning once including anti-dirrirea and anti-biotics and anti-septics.. he loves medication and i don't trust him.

Ok waffle over.. can anyone help?

Hi
I'm just wondering if maybe the diarrhoea has given him a temporary lactose intolerance ?
It can take up to 2 weeks (I think - don't quote me) for cows milk protein to work it's way out of the body, so it may take as long for his tummy to settle back down. I would put him back onto his original formula along with some lactase if you can get hold of any, or possibly keep him off milk for a couple of weeks until his tummy settles down and then put him back onto his original formula.
I would also try and get hold of some probiotics and do a couple of weeks of them to see if that helps settle things down.

I would like to keep him off milk for a bit although because he is still a baby I don't think i could settle him when he wakes etc.

What is really odd both the formula milk he was originally taking and the 1plus have the same amounts of lactose

As for probiotics.. i could give him natural yogurt couldn't I for the same effect?

P.s can't get hold of Lactase here thus putting him on Lactose free milk in the first place.

I wouldn't give natural yoghurt if he is not coping with milk.

Where are you living? Can you see another doc?

MickyLee · 21/05/2010 18:24

Hi Buda, I read that natural yoghurt seems to not affect lactose problems strangly enough.. if i remember right it is something to do with how the body breaks it up.. maybe wrong though

I live in Turkey. Money is very tight right now but i think we should ask DF for help to pay for another doc if we can't find a solution soon. I just don't want a doctor to give me something to treat the diarrhoea when i want to find the cause.

Hadn't heard that about natural yoghurt. Interesting.

Who made the diagnosis of IBS? He's too young for it (should be symptoms for 6 months etc).

Probiotic yoghurts have active bacteria. Can help in some IBS cases. May not work in others, not least because what's sold as probiotics may not in fact have enough bacteria in them.

He's now had 8 days of milk running straight through him. You say he doesn't show discomfort and is eating and drinking well. Has he lost any weight? What's your main concern ATM apart from how his poos look?

MickyLee · 21/05/2010 18:40

Doctor MickeyLee made the diagnosis... Basically I just labelled DS for sake of title for this thread.

I have just sent DH out now for LF milk.. see what difference it will make.

He may of lost a very small amount of weight but haven't had him weighed for a month so couldn't be sure. My main concern is him not keeping in everything he needs.. his main protein and iron source isn't getting a chance to absorb.

DS been on Lactose free milk for 24 hrs now and still the same.. 15 minutes later the milk runs straight through him! all of his meals are fine. no signs of pain

Whats next? try Soya milk? maybe a dairy problem

yoghurt will likely be ok in lactose intolerance because the majority of the sugar lactose is fermented to lactic acid, thus removing the need for the enzyme lactase to digest it.

However if there is the slightest chance that he is cows' milk protein intolerant as well (they are two separate and very different things) yoghurt will NOT be ok as the protein is not affected in any way by the yoghurt-making process and will be just as intolerable as milk.

I would actually remove the milk from his diet entirely for 3 days. Allow him to settle down and his gut to recover a bit, then slowly re-introduce it and see. He will be fine without milk for that length of time, replace it with water or a small amount of juice. At nearly 1, he should be on sufficient solids to be getting enough iron and protein from his food - if not, time to start introducing him to meat (unless you are vegetarian) or other iron and protein sources.

MickyLee · 22/05/2010 16:33

Thanks thumbwitch I am thinking it could now be a milk dairy intolerance because he had yoghurt and yes it affected him the same has the milk has been. I have tried not giving him milk but at 5.30 this morning he screamed the house down until he got a bottle.. water and juice just didn't cut it. Do you think Soya could be an alternative for a while? as it is dairy free.

Sorry, had to go to bed.
Soy milk is ok (personally I think it's vile but that's just me) or you could try rice milk - there's one that's fortified with Vitamin D and calcium that I gave to DS before he went on to cows' milk - it's very nice, quite sweet but nice.
There is also oat milk that you can get from H&B but it can taste a little powdery (although it's very nice); or almond milk (also from H&B or possibly supermarkets too - try the Free From sections)

The reason I'm suggesting the others is that soy is quite a common allergen so if your DS has started to react to CMP, there is a minor possibility he could start reacting to soy protein as well - but it's not that likely.

Just a quick and very happy update

DS went on Alpro soya milk last night.. loved it and cried for more when bottle finished and completley agreed with him.

I live in Turkey and can't find Rice, oat or almond milk so so happy the soy seems fine.

Strange to develop a sudden dairy intolernce though. Going to keep him on it for a month or so then very slowly re-indroduce dairy again

Thanks for all your advice and help everyone.. MN is fantasic
