Confused by disposables

Hi, I have 2 DC now so really I should have got this all figured out already, but still I'm confused. Today I went to buy DS some disposable nappies, he weighs 7kg, is 3 months old, fully BF with the usual BF runny poo, and non mobile. He has a tendency to develop nappy rash, so with that background I had Pampers baby dry size 4 in mind (at 7kg he's at the upper weight limit of the Pampers new baby size 3 which he's been in up until now, but he still has frequent poo much like a newborn). Shop was sold out of P babydry size 3 and 4 so I went for Huggies superdry size 3. It seems that some size 3s are OK to 9kg, others just to 7kg, but when I put 2 of these nappies side by side they look identical in size. Also what's the difference between Superdry, Simply Dry, Huggies Natural Fit etc. etc.? With his tendency for nappy rash I'd prefer nappies with crystals rather than wood pulp so that we have maximum absorbancy (is my logic right here - or could the chemicals in crystals be causing rash?!) How do I know which nappies have crystals vs. which are just paper pulp? Are the supermarket own brand just as good as premium branded? My priorities are keeping Ds's skin healthy, minimising leaks, then cost. I tried washable nappies on him as I used these successfully with my older DD, but his skin just didn't seem to get in with them. My DD never had rash in her life so I've never had to deal with that before. Could you give me your insights and opinions - what nappies do you use and why? Many thanks

Reusables. Your post demonstrates why!

Babies bottoms can be kept too dry in disposables, so theoretically it could be the crystal gel causing the nappy rash. Also it could be baby wipes - they are very harsh.

If you have washables how about trying a fleece liner in them to keep his bottom drier if youthink that was the problem.

I "think" all the supermarket brands have the crystal gels. Aren't Tushies the only ones without?

I use disposables "sorry" but both sons were very heavy wetters and cloth nappies just became a nightmare plus on DS1 we were living in a caravan.

I do think that these chemical filled "pampers" etc do give rashes and I have never had a problem with the eco-friendly disposables. Sainsburys sell "nature babies" I have also bought bulk on-line from Nature baby - Tushies etc. I think they are just as good as any chemical crystal filled nappies. I did on both sons go through the night time leakage (what ever brand I tried) what worked was wearing two nappies and then if dry reusing the outside nappy so it didnt get wasted. Also wearing the nappy wraps you have for the washable nappies are also handy.

Also in a mad rush I have picked up cheap nappies from Aldi etc and these have been good.

I never bothered with the ultra dry, maxi dry etc etc I just bought by size.

I truely hate the marketing of huggies/pampers etc. The control they have and save a child in the third world really makes me sick by a million dollar company.

Don't know the answer to your questions - but I think the thickness & absorbency does vary slightly within same size/different 'styles'.

I have stopped using Pampers as I noticed a peculiar, quite offensive 'chemical' like smell that seemed to increase when even slightly wet. Have not had this problem with Huggies (Natural Fit Size 3). No problems with nappy rash with either - we usually clean with water & rarely use disposable wipes.

We're just moving over to washable bamboo nappies & hope skin stays as nice.
