Hello again,

Ok I'm going to start buying bits and pieces for when my LO comes along including some reusable nappies to use as well.

So apart from the actual nappies, what else do I need to put on my shopping list?

Basic list - bucket, mesh, washable wipes

Deeluxe list - bucket (funky bucket from The Nappy Shed), mesh, washable wipes, waterproof out'n'about bag (Monkeyfoot bag from many places), Clean and Fresh sanitiser ( because it's so yummy)

I've never bothered with a mesh to line my bucket, do nappies clean as well inside one? I worry it isn't so efficient as they are all clumped together.

Anyway, sorry for hi-jack. I would suggest:

A bottle of tea tree oil - I stick a few drops inside the bucket.

A fleece blanket to cut up for liners (Ikea do a cheap one).

White vinegar - I add during the rinse cycle on my washing machine to soften.

Nappy NIppas if you are buying the kind of nappies that use them

I use a mesh and all the nappies come out during the wash cycle and are totally clean

I would also suggest getting two nappy buckets if you are only going to use real nappies as one bucket is not a good load for your machine. Two buckets worth is more efficient.

It is also good to have a waterproof drawstring bag or a toilet bag type bag to keep in your change bag for dirty nappies when out an about

oh and some paper liners for when your wee one starts solids and their poop is more solid

Depending on the kind of nappies you are using - covers or wraps, some of them are so adorable now!
Bucket and mesh x 2 (really nice to have one on both floors if you have an upstairs/downstairs type home)
MANY cloth wipes & something to store them in
Vinegar (for rinse cyle like CTN)
Waterproof bag for your nappy bag
Lots of liners of whatever kind you like (we liked hemp and fleece, but there are lots of options)
Doublers/soakers for extra absorbency when required

And some of the best advice I got that worked out beautifully - get a few DSQ prefolds even if you don't plan to do prefolds - they are SO useful for everything and last forever!

chutes, if you leave the mesh open they all wriggle out in the wash! I usually forget to line my bucket with mine though, or it is in the wash when the next nappy goes in the bucket so maybe two meshes are better?

fleece liners are brilliant, especially if using a terry type two part nappy. They take the brunt of any potential poo explosions and also act as a stay dry liner and don't scrunch up the way that paper ones do.

other than that; bucket, sanitiser (agree with Sal that clean and fresh is lovely), nippas, wet bag for transporting home dirty nappies, washable wipes and solution if you want to go fully washable.

and of course, lots and lots of lovely fluff

A nappy bin

Mesh laundry bag that you keep inside nappy bin. Not necessarily an essential item but a lot of people like them.

Tea tree oil

Container with lid for keeping wipes in if you are going have them already damp or Spray bottle if your doing it the dry cloth way.

Wipes. You can cut up a cheap fleecy blanket or buy wipes.

A waterproof bag for when out.

Nappy Nippas

Disposable liners

Nappy cream you many need it occasionally

Monkeyfoot Wet Bag
Washable wipes
Changing mat - washable one
Bucket or XL wet bag
Sanitiser - Clean & Fresh nice

Doh, for some reason I thought you tied up the mesh bag before you put it in the washing machine. Of course you leave it open, makes sense now

Hermya have you checked if your council have an incentive scheme for real nappies? You might get a voucher or samples.

littlesez · 19/05/2010 15:08

I don't bother with mesh. Would recommend washable wipes saves you a fortune!

Hermya321 · 20/05/2010 19:10

Chutes Yeah I get a voucher and am planning on applying for it in a few weeks.

Thank you everyone!! I now have a suitable shopping list.
