Thank you cards or not?

Post birthday party is it given that you give out Thank you cards or frowned upon if you don't? Infact do you give out thank you cards after Christmas too?

I always give thank you cards out unless, maybe, the person has seen ds open the pressie and he / we have thanked them then.

At the worst, they can't do any harm.

Positively, they can open up an avenue to discuss the value of things and gifts with DCs (Paraphrase - "I don't want to write a card" - "Well, why should x want to spend their own hard-earned money on you?"). They show manners, which is never a bad thing.

And from a purely pragmatic viewpoint, you are more likely to get a gift next year if you send a nice 'thank-you' card!

We send family thank yous at Christmas to thank people for all our presents. - I've always found it a bit odd when parents make a big deal of their kids saying thankyou and then don't bother themselves!

At birthdays the kids also send them and we either send a joint thankyou from hubby and me (our b'days are only a week apart) or we ensure we phone people personally to say thank you - never a text!

My kids have been involved in the cards from their first birthdays - either scribbling on them, writing their name, writing the whole thing, or even just sticking the stamp on and posting it themselves before they were able to write! I think it's really important to teach kids that presents are special and not something to be taken for granted.

Always, always always. DD age 13 has just handwritten hers and posted them yesterday!
