Wipe clean toys?

Hi,

I dont know if this is the right place to post. If not, apologies.

I have many toys and playgym etc which are wipe clean only. How do you wipe clean them???? Just wiping is surely not cleaning it? What do you use to wipe it clean?

Thanks for your advise.

any soft toys and mats etc go in the washing machine (on a "hand wash" cycle) unless they have electronics in them, whatever the label says. Obviously I can't guarantee anythign but I've never had any problems.

I put resilient plastic toys in the dishwasher and soft toys in the washing machine when DDs were babies. I only had one piece of Primo with a little mirror that got damaged.

Anything else was wiped over with Dettol surface spray now and then.

I did usually only wash things if they were actually dirty rather than every day, etc.

Glad you posted that as I've been wondering the same thing. I don't want to risk any toys that say wipe / sponge/ surface clean only yet as LO is not yet 5 months, so we've not had them long! Do want to get things more hygienic though, as she puts everything in her mouth and on the floor all the time now! I've washed every soft toy that says amchine washable in the machine, but don't know about the others.

Alison - I was worried about doing soft toys with dettol as if she puts it in her mouth that cant be good surely? Unless you can thouroughly rinse, whihc I don't see how you can if wipe clean only - obviously it is easier for hard toys.

I'm thinking maybe just sponge wipe with water and very dilute soap / washing up liquid, then with clean water, but not sure?

Sorry my post wasn't very clear.

I put all soft toys in the washing machine on a gentle wash - even the ones which say wipe clean only.

I had a friend who worked for a company who tests fabrics for washing labels and they have to pay for each level of testing so it's cheaper to put wipe clean only one.

I can't think of a single soft toy which has been worse off for this treatment.

I use the dettol spray for hard toys which can't go in the dishwasher.

Thanks for clarifying. can I check, are you including soft toys with rattles, squeaks, bells etc in that, or 'beanie' toys? They are the ones I am most worried about.

Soft toys like that I used to hoover regularly and then just wipe down with a damp cloth.
You could put some washing powder in a bucket of warm water and wipe it with a cloth from that and then dry it outside or something.
To wipe down all plastic/hard toys, I just use a baby wipe if I feel it needs a wipe, other than that I just leave them really.

I bought some milton wipes for things which were wipe clean only and gave them a really good going over.

Al1son · 20/05/2010 11:31

Yes eveything.

I can't give you any guarantees but the worst that's happened to me is the squeaks get full of water and have to be squeezed lots to get it out.

I had one dog with beanie paws which I washed and a bit of the stitching came undone but it might have done that anyway and was easily mended.

StealthPolarBear · 21/05/2010 17:40

yes, same here., all squeaky/rattly/beady toys are fine
sometimes ones with clear plastic on them get a bit misty inside but that's the worst
