Is there a set time for it? Does it have to be done before your children can go play/watch telly/etc? Do you supervise or check afterwards or leave them to it?

You come in, get changed, have a snack, do homework, do anything else you like .......

I do supervise and check. My kids are 6, 8, 10 (primary 2, 3 and 5). But taking it in and making sure it is in their bag etc is their job. Its not my homework!

Mine are in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2.

They only get homework at weekends, and it gets done on a Friday night so that it isn't hanging over us all weekend!

I do supervise, but that is expected by their teachers at this age. I don't correct, but I do encourage them to check it properly so that they can correct themselves.

Obviously I give more help to the 4 year iold than to the 7.5 year old!

I used to remind mine until they got to age 8/9 and would sometimes be there to talk about it, but never checked written work: I always assumed it would be a good thing if the teacher could see what they struggled with.

DD age 7, yr 3 gets given homework on a Friday which is expected in on a Wednesday.

It usually gets part done on Monday and then finished off on Tuesday. Gets done either before or after dinner. I sit with her and make helpful suggestions but try to get her to think about it too.

Same with spellings homework- given on a Friday and tested the following Friday. 2-3 times during the week I will make her sit down and look at them and test her on them, by Friday she knows them.

There is no hard and fast rule about when so long as it's done and handed in on time.

DS is 6.
It goes - get home, get changed, something to eat, homework (supervised) then do what he wants until dinner.

Any age, cat. I never got any supervision with mine (and never got any till I was in secondary) and I was just thinking today I wonder if I'd be any better at organisation and the concept of Getting Things Done Early if I'd had a routine?

So I was thinking, is it better to get your kids to do theirs as soon as they come home from school to get it over with? Or is it better to encourage them to use the daylight hours to play, and then do it after dinner? Should there be a set hour? Etc etc etc.

I overthink Future Parenting Issues, basically.

DS is in year 3 and gets homework on a Monday, to be given in by the following Monday. They're supposed to read 20 mins per day and learn tables, and there are usually 20 spellings to learn.

We always make sure it's done, but it's usually on Sunday evening or even Monday mornings! He does read regularly and we run through tables whenever.

I do sit with him as his handwriting/presentation isn't great, so I encourage him with that.

coppertop · 13/05/2010 13:44

Mine get home from school, have a snack and some time to unwind a bit, and then get on with their reading or other homework. After that they're free to play, watch television etc.

The exception is on Fridays when they can just go and play instead. Any work left over is then done on a Sunday morning.

I make sure that they do the work and that they check it afterwards, but otherwise it's up to them.
