Leaking Lollipops after an hour...am getting a bit fed up!

Advice most welcome please!

DS is 21 months, typical active toddler and is leaking through so many nappies and trousers.I am running out! Even when not leaking I change him at least every 2 hours during the day, but he can be soaking wet even an hour after a change (we use a disposable when out and at night).

He is obviously getting to the stage of holding larger quantities of wee as he also occasionally identifies when he has had a poo.I'm getting fed up of constantly changing outfits and doing so much washing.

He wears Lollipop fleece or bamboo shaped nappies with either a Lollipop wrap or Bummis Whisper wrap, the gussets on these, even when they haven't leaked are very wet and I need a fresh wrap every nappy change.

I used Fuzzi Bunz on DD (now 3.6) and had heaps of leaks too, hence the swap to two part system. Using cloth for me was for environmental and financial reasons and to encourage earlier use of potty....well I am already onto washing machine number 2 and DD was 3 before potty training was sussed. Am feeling quite despondent and appreciate some thoughts as what to do next...I still have yet to sell all the Fuzzi Bunz and DH obviously reluctant to part with cash on more nappies that don't do the job....

You could add a booster (use your Fuzzi inserts perhaps?) - between nappy and wrap is best as it will push the nappy closer to him so when he wees it goes into the nappy rather than down the leg and out, but I am confused as to why haven't you started potty training when he has an older sibling to copy, and is doing big wees? In Dr Spock's day most babies were potty trained by 18 months, I'd definitely suggest shed the nappies (go cold turkey, encourage DD to help and get him to copy her, and try - you've everything to gain.

You need to strip wash them if you havent done already - wash them twice with no detergent - a build up of dteergent can repel wee rather than the fabric being absorbent - esp in pocket nappies.

If that fails some bamboo boosters should sort you out

I found with ds1 that it was the type of fabric which meant we got leaks IYSWIM. I found that fleece liners seemed to mean more leaks as they seemed to repel the wee when he did a huge wee. Also microfibre didn't seem to absorb quickly enough. I found that terry material nappies with either a paper liner or no liner at all were best. Ds1 didn't seem bothered by a liner or not.

Also I had problems with the bindings of wraps getting damp quickly so not being able to reuse them. I switched to motherease airflows. This solved the problem as the leg binding is much lower on the leg, so not near the nappy to get wet.

With my ds1 this seemed to just be a faze as after a few months we were able to return to our beloved Fuzzi's.

Thank you for your replies, some interesting thoughts....

Ariela, potty training is not something I had thought of...I'm still recovering from the long process of DD! There is a potty around and DS has been shown what to do with it but DD is too big to use it (DS too small to use the toilet even with a seat) and DS just loves to stand in it and use it to put his toys in....I was one of those babies trained by being sat on a potty, apparently complete dry day and night by 21 months but not convinced DS in the right frame of mind....lots of frustation from being unable to do or say what he wants and quite aggressive with toys and his sister...also he rarely sits still!

Octo...strip washing, haven't done that so will definately give it a go. Bamboo boosters a good idea...I really like the Bamboo nappies we use...apart from the time it take them to dry and how awkward movement is for the poor boy...true hip wiggling!

Tutu....we use paper liners...DS's poos are awful! However I agree that terry material better at absorbency. Thanks for recommendation of Motherease airflows...might have to purchase one to try. I really would like to continue with reusables but it feels like a lot of energy sometimes!
