Hiya, Just a quick question... If you have a 2yr old what words are they able to say at the moment?

When my daughter was 2 she could say loads, count to 10, knew all colours and body parts, sing songs etc etc...

My son is coming up to 2 and he can only say the odd word like daddy, grandma, daisy.

Thanks xxx

I don't think dd2 talked at all when she was just two. She is almost three now and her speech is coming on great. Dd1 was like your dd.

my DS is 2.6 and is talking quite well now, although his pronunciation is still very babylike in lots of words. When he had just turned 2, he could say quite a few words but no sentence construction. He has been able to count to 11 (don't ask) successfully and properly for the last 3 weeks.

A friend of mine has a DS who is 2.3 and is seeing a speech therapist next week (referral appt) because he is barely saying anything. In the last week he has just started to say more words than he has ever said before (typical!).

How far past 2 is your DS? I don't think it is much to worry about, they all go at different speeds with different things and your DS is probably very good at physical things, is he? He'll probably start one day and talk nineteen to the dozen from then on!

Dd - Darling/Dear daughter

DS - Darling/Dear son

The numbers are for the order they were born in.

thumbwitch, that is exactly what dd2 did. As soon as we had put in her referral she started talking. She still does not say much, but she can talk when she wants to.

My mum had been worrying about her speech lately as she still has not heard her say more than one word i.e. drinky/biscuit/Scooby to signal what she wants, until she bathed her a few nights ago and got soap in her eye and was told 'Get me a towel and get me out of this bath now'

DD1 (my eldest) was vyer verbal at 2 and had loads of words, DD2 is 2.6 now and it's only in the last few months she has had any vocabulary beyond hello, bye, mummy and daddy (and 'DD1 stop')
I think my eldest was a bit more advanced which confused me when dd2 wasn't.

Shiny - PMSL at your DD saying that to your mum! I should think she almost fell over in shock, no?

Mumof2x · 12/05/2010 14:35

Oh thanks now I can use the DD and DS lol!!

My DS isnt 2 yet he will be 2 in 2 months time but my health visitor said he needs speach theopy and should be saying alot more. The more people I speak to the more I think she is just worrying me for nothing! I think he can talk hes just lazy! Eg.. this morning I went into his room and he looked me straight in the eye and said morning! I rushed down stairs to my mum and said Max said morning to grandma and he just said NO the one word he has no troubble saying!! Kids hey gotta love them hehe!

I think my mind is much more at ease now to be honest Thanks all xxx

DS1 quick to speak could understand everything he was saying and hold conversations with him at 2, DS3 the same.. DS2 didn't say anything much until 2.5 and then spoke in full sentences.. He has the best language comprehension of all 3. Guess he wasn't saying anything until he knew he could get it right.

thumbwitch · 12/05/2010 14:46

??? He's not even 2 and your HV is talking speech therapist??? .

At 22mo, DS wasn't saying much at all (although he had Mummy off pat) except words that started with 'b' - and some that didn't but he chose to start them with a 'b' anyway!

Give it a few months before you even start to worry about it and tell the HV to mind her own (ask her if she has any of her own DC - although be warned, they're probably prodigies if she has)

Mumof2x · 12/05/2010 14:56

Hahaha!! Well I was worred because as I say ms DD was speaking great at 2 and ny neice who is just 2 speaks great! So I thought oh no whats wrong with him and when my HV it made me worry more. But now im not going to worry at all!! Thanks all xxxxx

I have 20 month twins - one boy and one girl. My daughter is months ahead of my son in talking - he has only just started to catch up with a few words instead of grunting. I have been told its because girls develop communication skills much faster, something to do with the way in which the brain develops, but my son is much better at shape sorters and problem solving. Eventually it all evens out.
