baby sling/carrier recommendations?

DC no.2 is due in 4 weeks. With DD I had a kari-me sling, which I found great for around the house, she fell asleep in it easily and was really comfortable in it. But the downside was it was impossible to get her out once she'd fallen asleep so I ended up wearing her all the time and she hated sleeping in her moses basket at night time. I also found it a pain if we were out and about, for example if I was in the car/going shopping and wanted to get her in and out of the sling, the material would go slack and I had to re-tie it, v difficult when you've got noone to hold the baby!

This time I think I'd still like a sling-like carrier but one that's a bit more user-friendly! I've heard good things about the Baba sling, anyone used one? I did get a Maya wrap ring sling with DD but sent it back as it never felt safe and was uncomfortable to wear.

Or should I just get a more traditional Baby Bjorn-type thing? I'm guessing it would be easier for out and about and I do intend to do lots of walking, taking DD to the park etc.

we have a moby and its brilliant! very easy to use and tie. any fairly simple to remove a sleeping baby from .

i may be wrong but consult the sling board before shelling out for a baby bjorn. im sure there are some issues with them

I used a baba sling from about 4 weeks with dd2 - it was great for hands free breast feeding eg when pushing dd1 on swings. Still use it at times now (she is 2) as it is great to pop her in for short trips. However, it is not for everyone and lots of people don't get on with it. It does a a bit of getting used to. Would recommend a sling meet type of meeting to try out first.
I also have a babyhawk mei tei - love it too but couldn't feed in it. It is more like a baby bjorn (but much, much better).

I wouldn't go for a baby bjorn - compared to the kari me you will find it really uncomfortable. The "newly redesigned ergonomic" one is no better either.

If you want something similar to the bjorn as in self-contained in the sling rather than tied to you, look at the Beco. They are expensive but you can use them right from newborn to toddlerhood, and you might be able to get one secondhand if cost is an issue.

Hi, I spent so much time researching slings. In the end I never used one at all because of a site were I read about safety and spinal damage. At the time I had picked out a lovely one and was just about to order it.
There are sling libaries though were you can try out different types before buying because the range is huge and it's a tough decision.

Best of luck.

I'm loving the close sling for ds, though he hated feeding in it he loves the inwards and outwards facing kangaroo type positions. It's also very easy to wear without a baby in iyswim.

close

seashore, where is the sling library? always thought there was a need for that kind of thing cos you really can't tell til you've tried one if it will suit you. hated the Baby bjorn though fortunately only paid £15 for it at an NCT sale and got a karri me in the end. would be interested to try out others though, like ring sling if we have DC2

we had a Moby wrap but that just didn't work for us. Now we have a Babybjorn Active after trying one out and DS seemed to love it so we got one. It's easy to get baby in and out if you're on your own and quick to put on. Only thing is that it's no good for little babies like a wrap type carrier would be.

FlipFantasia · 12/05/2010 11:00

Another vote for the close sling here (DS is asleep in it as I type).

No faffing with tying, so very easy to put on, put baby in, take baby out etc so it's great for me when I'm out and about alone. Very comfortable to wear and very easy to adjust, so that it's easy for me to carry DS in it and then my DH to carry him with minimal fuss.

We have the Close sling which we liked - no tying involved, but virtually impossible to take a sleeping baby out. You could try a Mei Tai style (e.g. a Connecta) if you want to be able to put them down when asleep.

Stretchy slings are good for smaller babies while woven slings are good for larger / older babies. DS is now 4.5 months and a big 18lbs, and we find that in the Close carrier he gradually slips lower and lower despite constant re-adustment (and despite the fact that it is supposed to be suitable for babies up to 35lbs). It was fine for when he was little, but I'd use something like a Connecta now.

If I were getting another sling, I'd also go for one which could be used for back carries as well as front ones. The Close carrier only does front carries.

Baby Bjorns and similar baby carriers are not supposed to be good for carrying babies for any length of time as it puts their weight on their crotch & pelvic bones IIRC. Fabric slings spread the weight across their bottom.

Google 'Sling library' to see if there's one near you. I borrowed a couple of slings from our local library which was great to see which suited us.

You can hire slings over the web: google 'sling hire' to find companies that do it. That might be another good way of trying different ones out.

My sister used one called Bubba Moe. Was great.

I will be buying one for the first time with DC3.

It seems to keep baby snug with reasonable neck/head support and has baby sort of wrapped up without limbs exposed or all out and flopping around.

Hi Trixie123,

and for Ireland google attatchment parenting and you'll find a good sling libary

twolittlemonkeys · 12/05/2010 20:48

Moby, I loved the slight stretch to it and being able to tie it and pop baby in and out without untying. Versatile as you can do loads of different carries. Can't wait to use my moby again when DC3 arrives.
