How many reusable nappies for nappy bag?

I'm using a two-part nappy system for normal usage, but am planning to get some pocket nappies for the nappy bag when we're out and about. How many am I likely to need, assuming I do a nappy wash every other day?

If I were planning to be out for a whole day, I'd take normal nappies with me, but for normal usage, I'll need to allow for some pocket nappies in the change bag and some in the wash.

Also, how many wet bags am I likely to need? I have one, but I'm guessing that I'll need more than one in case that one is in the wash along with its soiled contents.

TIA.

Definitely get at least two wet bags, as one will be in the wash and one in your bag. If you can afford it I'd get three, then you have a spare if you get behind on washing or one isn't dry ready to take out.

How old is your baby? My DD is 1yr and uses only two nappies a day and one at night, so I only take one out with me when I go. So in my case, I have 3 or 4 nappies on constant rotation in my change bag. If your baby uses more in a day then of course you'd need more in rotation.

I have to say though, that as dedicated to washables as I am and love my pocket nappies I always have one disposable tucked away in a pocket in my change bag in case the poop-armageddon occurs!

I take 3 nappies for a whole day out, plus one disposable (for mighttime). And a mini pack of baby wipes and a handful of those thin plastic bags. I've got 6 pocket nappies but usually take the 2-piece ones with one spare wrap and nippa.

The baggies of dirty nappies just get shoved under the pushchair. I never got on with a nappy bag as washable nappies didn't fit in it.

Thanks for the replies.

DS is 4 months, so goes through nappies more frequently than an older baby. A second baby is a definite possibility at some point in the future so getting enough for a younger baby wouldn't be a bad idea.

I'm not against using disposables for out & about, but it seems a bit of a waste to buy packets of disposables when they may or may not be needed before DS grows out of them. At least with pocket nappies I'd feel I was getting more of my money's worth.

ds is 3m, I use 2-parters and always have a nappy (and a mat, small pack of wipes and some bags) in my bag - if out for longer then will add another nappy and a wrap

am perplexed by the notion of buying special nappies to tak out - just use the norml ones

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/05/2010 19:51

We take out about 4 inserts for our Itti Bittis and 2 outers, plus a couple of disposables just in case (I buy them in the largest size that still fits DD!). Have never used them all but we have been able to stay out longer on a whim because I've over-packed supplies

Just wondering why you're buying pocket nappies for out and about, when you have 2-parters already? However, I would probably say 6 or so would be fine - keep a little tally of how often you change your DC at home then you'll know.

We dry pail at home (and have two mesh bags we put in the bucket, one is in use and one is spare). I have one zipped wet bag for the nappy bag. It washes and drys quickly but we have an old drawstring one for emergencies. Definitely get a zipped one as I've found the drawstring gets stuck on the plastic lining of the fabric so fails to close easily.

Maybe I'm confusing myself! I was thinking that since I've got 4 wraps in total, then if I had say 2 in the wash, 1 on DS and one on hand in case of emergencies, I wouldn't have a spare to keep in the nappy bag. Rather than buy an extra wrap or two for the nappy bag in the current size - and the next size up etc, I thought it would be more straightforward to have a couple of birth to potty nappies to keep in the bag.

But perhaps I just need to make sure I'm organised enough to pick up one of the normal wraps and put it in the change bag before I leave the house, rather than having one sitting already in the change bag IYSWIM?

Apologies for my non-functioning brain - I blame DS's night-waking habits.

I see where you're coming from with the pocket nappies now. I've only used Itti Bittis and Tots Bots Bamboozles so in the dark with other brands.

We just use our usual nappies in the nappy bag and I fill it up before we go out. It's always full of everything else, just add the nappies. Plus, once they're dirty and in the wash, you'll need to re-fill the change bag anyway.

You could pick up some additional second-hand nappies so you have some cheap spares for the nappy bag. We've got some good bargains as the Ittis and MotherEase wraps for the Tots Bots are sized.

MrsBadger · 08/05/2010 21:58

ah I see

top tips:
when out, you can usully put the previous wrap back on - give it a wipe if damp

wash wraps with clothes rather than pailing them to improve turnaround

as CrazyHose sys, load nappy bag evry time

AngelDog · 11/05/2010 10:29

Thanks, glad I wasn't going too mental. I had forgottenthat I'd only need a clean wrap in the event of a poo explosion. I think I'll get a few more cheap wraps instead of pocket nappies.

oooh never skimp on wraps they are very important - better to get second hand decent ones! Would suggest having 3 nappies when go out - I use a MonkeyFoot Wet Bag - have a small one for washable wipes and a large one for dirty stuff - keep the clean ones in changing bag or under pushchair in another MF bag

jeee · 11/05/2010 14:15

I never took reusables out because I always ended up absent-mindedly throwing them into the nappy bin in the baby changing area, which wound up rather expensive.

AngelDog · 11/05/2010 18:37

jeee - that's a useful tip seeing as I have half a box of disposable nappy bags waiting to be used up...will have to make sure I don't do the same.

The only tip I'll add to the advice you have already is to try to remember to restock your bag when you get home. Made this mistake once and only had the used nappies from the previous day and the emergency disp in the bottom of the bag which was too small, though did get us home

AngelDog · 17/05/2010 13:26

NappyFairy - that's just the sort of thing I'd do - I've found used nappies from several days before in my bag.

I think I'll try to make restocking the bag it a proper habit each time I get home.
