Just that really . I'd like some ideas (preferably cheap and simple) for making a 5 year old boy smile.

Just thought of another - sock fight. Empty all sock drawers in the house and use them like snowballs. Best contained in your bedroom so there's a big bed to dive onto.

let him have his best friend over and take them to the park then let them watch a DVD.

Play in the garden with him - water fights are a particular favourite.

Buy him 5 packets of Match Attax

Let him have a swearing competition with his big brother (also useful for knowing what words they actually do/don't know )

Brolly, I've just posted here about the fantastic make your own Ice Cream in a bag experiment I did with Ds this evening.

Special food-based treats are to make popcorn or pancakes or Sainsburys sell packets of gingerbread men with little squeezy icing tubes and sweeties to decorate them with.

My mum does utterly brilliant treasure hunts for my 5 yo using a series of digital photos that she cuts up into little jigsaws in envelopes. Each clue to be found contains the picture of the hiding place of the next one until the final prize... He loooooooooves it...

  1. Give him a hose and let him "water" the plants or if you have a sprinkler both of you run in an out of it
  1. Put on old clothes and have a squirty cream fight outside or for the more conservative child/mum water pistol fight
  1. Make a den out of sheets/blankets and then let him have a secret tea party
  1. Take him on a walk (suggest kiddiwalks) make him the leader/finder of signs etc. It also helps with the reading.
  1. Have a dinosaur fight (with occasional cuddles) he is T-Rex (obviously)
  1. Play cricket/football
  1. Give him some chalks and let him chalk to his hearts content on the patio. If it is forecast rain the next day it will soon wash off.
