DS is hot and sweaty at night already!

DS 2.8 goes to bed under a 4.5 tog duvet wearing a short sleeved pyjama top and nappy - that's all

However since the weather has become more summery, he's really sweaty and red whenever I check him. This has gone on for a week or so, so it's not illness related. Our house is pretty well insulated and his room is next to the airing cupboard so it is about 21 degrees in there at the moment (with the window open!)

In previous years I'd have put him in his 0.5 tog grobag but now he's in a big boys bed I'm stumped! I don't want to put just a sheet on him as I'd worry that might be too cold, and he always seems to get twisted up in blankets

I've looked online and I've found a 2.5 tog duvet but it's £32.99 which seems a bit steep. I just wonder if I'm missing something... I suppose it could be the waterproof bottom sheet making him sweaty but I don't really want to take that off

What do you lot do?

Add another sheet under him and one on top. Some kids do get hotter at night than others, DS is under a big thick duvet, DD has been under a sheet since February .

Incidentally supermarkets sell thin duvets very cheaply!

greensnail · 28/04/2010 21:33

DD is still in a grobag in her big girl's bed. Don't know if you could persuade a 2.8 year old back into one if they're used to a duvet though.

How about leaving off the top and just putting him in his nappy?

grapesandmoregrapes · 28/04/2010 21:40

agree with whomovedmychocolate, DD1 is 2 and sleeps in pyjamas and a duvet and is always sweaty, DD2 is 5mo and sleeps in vest, babygro, sleeping bag and two wool blankets and always has cold hands (both in same room btw)

thinner duvet or a blanket is probably the best option, but if he was too hot he wouldn't sleep so try not to worry.

Thanks for the replies...

whomovedmychocolate: what is the logic behind adding an extra sheet underneath? Yes I got the 4.5 tog at a massive tesco but that's the lightest they do. Ebay seem to have 2.5 togs so that's an option actually

greensnail: I had considered leaving his top off but he often has the whole of the top half of his body poking out of the duvet and I'd worry he'd get too cold. I'm a worrier, can you tell!? (the gro bag has been passed on)

grapes: thanks for the reassurance, he's a great sleeper so I guess I can't be doing too badly

I wish I could leave the window open all night but I don't want to risk morning noises waking him up earlier than need be!

What about a sheet and a cellular blanket? DS's cotbed ones are big enough to use on his single bed if I twist them sideways.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/04/2010 21:50

If it is the plastic undersheet causing sweating, if you have two sheets it feel cooler on the bum!

4.5 togs is very light btw. If you want 2.5 togs you'd actually be better with a cotton sheet and a cellular blanket.

GoldenSnitch · 28/04/2010 22:03

We have HippyChick waerproof sheets - even got one for our bed for while I was pregnant in case my waters broke on our brand new mattress that's still on now for when I'm leaking milk - they're fab, not at all plasticy feeling or sweaty.

serengeti · 28/04/2010 22:06

I've found tht ds is sweaty earlier in the evening but then cools down when asleep - when i check on him before I go to bed hes ok.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/04/2010 22:07

I have one from the white company which is lovely, on DD's bed, no rustling, no sweating and it goes in the tumble drier!!!!

HerbWoman · 29/04/2010 11:49

DS usually gets very hot (although not so much lately) and I would use a single flat sheet sideways and folded over the top edge of a thin fleece blanket. There's usually loads to tuck in each side then and he didn't get in a tangle. Doesn't reach to the bottom of the bed but at that age it doesn't matter.

TheLemur · 29/04/2010 21:48

Herbwoman that sounds good, I have a fleece blanket. I liked the cellular blanket idea but I tried and my cot size one does not stretch all the way around the mattress

The plastic sheet always made my DS sweat, and me too when I had one on bed late in pregnancy. Hated it.

That said my DS is always hot at night but seems happy enough. His room is generally about 21 degrees and is also next to airing cupboard and has the bathroom otherside with its 'always on when the hot water is' radiator so it can turn into an oven in summer

GoldenSnitch · 30/04/2010 10:24

Seriously, try these ones

They're soft and not in the slightest bit plasticy and yet totally waterproof. Our's will probably stay on even after I've finished feeding (and leaking!) just to protect the mattress as we really can't tell it's there so why not!
