Having a chat about sex.

Hi all,
my dd is 9 and has really crampy feelings in her tummy today. She's gone on a school trip and is o.k but was funny before.
I have told her about periods and what happens and she is young but i wonder if she's going to hit puberty as she's very moody lately too.
ANYWAY, she was full of questions this morning about periods and i said we'd chat tonight when we had more time. I have a feeling this is going to lead onto sex as she's very curious about anatomy and how to give birth and where babies come from.
I haven't talked about sex to her, just periods and her body.
Any tips? How far should i go? Any advice would be read and welcomed.
I'd much rather she heard it comfortably at home than getting a shock at school so i am o.k with it, just haven't been here before

Is it too early? (in the day, not her life )

Hi,

My DD is ten and has started developing boobs, so I have been forced to face the fact that she is no longer a little girl. Argh!

I got hold of a couple of books aimed at this age group. The first really only covered periods and moods etc. However, it got my DD thinking and I then bought her one which also covered the male side of things. She has reacted really sensibly to the whole thing and we have had some lovely 'woman-to-woman' chats cuddled up in bed.

DD now wears a crop top and I have also given her a very discrete pad to keep in her school bag just in case... I wasn't told about periods by my mum and thought that I was dying, so I am determined to handle things differently.

Let me know if you'd like details on the books.

Oh yes please Florence, i too remember getting my period unprepared.
I was thinking exactly that, putting a pad in her bag 'just incase' then i thought, i don't her worrying for ages if she doesn't get them till 12-13. I'll see if she suggest it i think.
She also wears a crop top as she's shy getting changed in school.

This is a brilliant book.

www.amazon.co.uk/Lets-Talk-About-Robie-Harris/dp/1406324205/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qi d=1272453440&sr=8-1

It is light hearted but contains a huge amount of information. I have bought it for each of my children at age 1- 12 (dependent upon need!) and they have all dipped in and out of it at need. It covers stuff like spots as well, which I have found a useful way of bringing up conversations about 'the book' when I think they need reminding to check something out.

It does not replace chat obviously but facilitates a bit of privacy for them in finding things out without resorting to dodgy searches on the Internet!

Thank you, i've looked at that book, will order it now.
I think if she asks, i'll give her the basics (best i can) and then a book would be a great way for her to find out more at her own pace and choosing.

Hi,

They are the The Little Book of Growing Up by Vic Parker (very much focussed on periods) and What's Happening To Me? by Susan Meredith.

The latter is more grown up and has diagrams showing how to insert a tampon and so on, but it did answer all of my DD's questions. I'd recommend it.

My dd1 and I got on to sex during the periods conversation.

She was hilarious!! "People really do that? Like for FUN?????"

That book looks good though I think I might get it for her.

Angeliz · 28/04/2010 12:44

ha ha weegiemum,
at the minute i keep gettiong from dd, 'So when you're having a baby do they see your bum!!'

It was swiftly followed by

Her : "Do YOU and DAD do that?"

Me: "Where do you think you came from?"

Her: "But, I mean, since then?"

Me: "You have a little brother and sister!"

Her: "But since then?"

Me: "Yes!"

Her: "EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW"
