ds hates nappy change time- it's becoming a real nightmare

he is 11 months and for about the last month he just refuses to lie down at all for his nappy change. he immediately flips to his front and screeches. i have tried on my knee, on the bed, on the floor, distraction, giving him something to eat, getting ds2 to talk/sing to him, i sing to him.

i know he is at that age where he just wants to be on the go all the time but we are ending up with poo everywhere and nappies hanging off him everyshape. i use cloth so it can be a bit fiddly with the nappy nippa but i try to be as quick as possible.

what can i do? it really is ridiculous, we fight over who is going to change him now because both of us hate doing it.

It is HELL when they do this. My child-minder has a electric whilrly fairy baton thing that is an all flashing spinning wonder that transfixes my DS. However, at home he is having none of it and wont be cajoled by anything. So I put his head in between my thighs and change him upside down. So I am leaning over him. The head clamp is really effective for stopping him rolling, and although he may wriggle he can't get free. It is not painful at all, it is just more stable to hold him this way rather than squishing his tummy with one hand and trying to change him with the other! HTH

yes ive been trying to do teh one handed nappy change, other hand is holding him down and it just isn't happening at all. have tried doing it with him standing up as well but he walks about and i have to start all over again. it takes AGES to do a nappy now, especially the terries because i have to keep refolding them.

I know you're using real nappies, but if you want this to be easier (even just sometimes eg when out and about or in a hurry to get somewhere) try pull-ups/nappy pants. You can change them standing up or in various other positions. the old one rips off and because they are "pants" shaped with no doing up, they won't go wonky.

They don't have to be toilet training ones, just pants-style nappies. Lidl do good ones that are pretty cheap.

The good news is they tend to grow out of it, my DD went through the same for a couple of months. Im ashamed to say it but a little bribe sometimes did the trick ;) and yes trying to get a nippa on and keep them still is awful thats why i just used my bumgenius for a couple of months as the aplix is soooo much easier! Good luck

Try the ball of sellotape trick.
Plonk him on his back and immediately hand him a ball you've made of sellotape (actually packing tape is best) with lots of the tape scrunched up sticky side outwards as much as possible. He'll grab the ball and it'll stick to one hand so he'll try to take it off with the other, only to find it's stuck, so he'll remove it with the other hand again....but it's stuck...

Don't waste time watching his antics though, it'll pin his shoulders firmly to the changing mat, so take your opportunity to whip the napppy off and the new one on, then steal the ball off him and put it away till next time.

ELC Rainmakers solely bought for use on the changing mat also work well.
