nearly 5yr old still can't go through the night

Just wondering how to approach nighttime bed wetting.

My DS1 still needs a nappy/nighttime pants/pull up thing when he goes to bed. Generally, he goes to bed without, we creep up later, take him to the loo, and then put a nappy on him. Reason being, if we don't put the nappy on, inevitably by about 11pm- wet bed.

And he does not wake up. The damp does not seem to bother him at all. I would have thought wetting the bed would wake him up, he'd not like it, and slowly train himself to wake up when he needs to go etc...

It's been months of this. Either we keep on doing what we're doing, which is not sorting the issue out, or we stop putting the nappies on and instead have to change the bed every night.

I have tried not giving him anything to drink after 5pm, and as mentioned, taking him to the loo once he's gone to sleep (he then often does not actually do a wee).

Any ideas? I think nearly 5 is old enough to be dry through the night, but happy to be told otherwise.

Have a look at the [[http://www.eric.org.uk/ ERIC00 site and you'll see that at 5yo a large proportion of boys are still wetting at night. Many mumsnetters will back this up. In fact I suspect if you take him to your GP they probably won't take any notice of it until he's at least 7yo. But there's some good information if you go to the 'Parents' section, select 'Leaflets' from the lefthand menu and download the Bedwetting Guide.

As far as I understand it, there's a switch in the brain which tells us not to wee when we're asleep, and in some children that switch is inactive until they are quite old.

I have an 8yo ds1 who still wets the bed, never ever wakes up when wet and has not responded to hormonal treatment or careful monitoring of his drinks during the day. It's frustrating, but I prefer using DryNites, despite the expense, to changing the sheets every day. As far as I'm aware neither dp or I had this problem but I'm just hoping he will grow out of it at some point.

agree totally with mamanporcine.

My 5yo is the same. He tells me once it is dark and he is alseep he just can't wake up to go to the loo.

I don't think anything will change that until he is ready. I left my three other children to do it in their own time, and plan to do the same for this one.

My DS also nearly 5 is exactly the same.

His pull ups are still pretty heavy in the morning too.

TBH I think it will just happen when he is ready

DS1 is 5 and a half and still heavy wet pull up in the morning

am I right in thinking we can get the pull ups on prescription after age 5? they are so expensive!

MamanPorcine · 25/04/2010 11:53

If we can, no one has told me! But then I've been putting off this issue since it's quite minor compared with everything going on with ds2...

Here's the ERIC link again, posted my message before checking: ERIC

no one told me about prescription pull ups either

Would definately be good news if its the case!!!

Nappy allowance policy varies by area. I think it would be unlikely though for a non disabled child.

I jsut use sains own brand, they seem to do the job fine and he does wee a lot.
