keeping nappies soft?

Just about to embark on reusables after being given a set of Motherease nappies - just awaiting delivery of wraps. They're in lovely condition but feel a bit stiff/ crunchy. I've just put them in the wash and will dry them outside (am I right in thinking tumble drying is inadvisable?). What do you do to keep them soft? I've heard that fabric conditioner affects absorbency. Thanks.

You can tumble dry the nappies to fluff them up a bit thats ok but i wouldnt advice putting wraps in dryer. Another great tip i learnt off my grandma which works well is soaking in a bucket of rain water overnight then washing, dunno how it works but it does!! No fabric conditioner or it will damage the nappy.

You can use Bold 2-in-1 on nappies as the conditioner is clay based and won't clog the fibres. Keeps mine soft and smelling nice. Don't forget you will only need half to a third of the amount of detergent you would usually use. I only use 2 milk scoops full of powder unless they are really pooey.

soak them in rainwater then put them in a spin cycle in the washing machine.

If you can't get your hands on a bucket of rainwater, then add vinegar to tap water and do the same.

It is hard water that makes them crunchy. If the soap powder is not washed out properly too because you use too much or again because of hard water, the same thing happens and they also get smelly after a wee.

We use TotsBots Potion on ours (great great at sanitising the nappies and doesn't leave a strong smell ).
The trick that works for us is a bit of lemon juice as a conditioner! Really works wonders! We use about 1/4 cup for a full load. And don't worry about it being against DC's skin! You won't use anywhere near enough to cause any irritation, their urine is times more acidic!
