blood test tips?

My DD (9) has to have a blood test on Wednesday morning (she doesn't know yet). She is horrendous with anything to do with doctors anyway and that's before you throw needles into the equation. I will be bribing her of course, but just wondering if anyone had any tips to assist with getting her through it/getting her to keep still whilst making sure doctor and I retain our sanity (and our eardrums).

One option it to get your GP to prescribe Emla cream, which acts as a local anaesthetic. If you put that on 2 hours in advance she really won't feel a thing (I am 34 and a BIG blood test phobe, and I use this stuff ).

Good luck

As little time waiting at the hospital as possible. It's ok to shout when having it done.

When Ds had blood tests they used the emla cream at the hospital. Why don't you ring them up and ask if they use it.

Thanks - unfortunately we don't go to the hospital for bloods, just our GP. We have to go between 7am and 8am (we're in Germany), so the cream won't help, unless I wake her up at 5am! At least we get it over with early in the day. I spoke to her about it last night and have bribed her with a trip to the bakery after and a day out to the local animal park.

Have you got a portable DVD player or an iPod? Could be a good distraction technique for her of she's concentrating on watching her favourite movie or listening to some nice music?
