Hi Ladies

DD is 10 months and just got her second tooth but with it has come an increase in number and sploshiness of poo and such a sore bottom it makes me wince just looking at it . Metanium helped initially but now she just screams when I put it on and so desperate for an alternative. She is in real nappies most of the time and has never had nappy rash before. Can anyone advise here.....can the GP do anything or is that a wasted visit??

All ideas much appreciated

Lots and lots of time without the nappy (eg an hour before bed). Get a big plastic table cloth and spread it on the floor to catch any accidents, or do it outside. (My DD also in real nappies and only has nappy rash occasionally, but no-nappy time usually fixed it. Along with sudocreme and a barrier cream).

metanium clears it up quickly. just a very small amount - you should still be able to see the skin/redness through the cream

If it doesn't clear up with a good bum airing and a standard cream, worth a pop to the surgery to check that it's not thrush- very common and easily treated. Hope you get it sorted, dd walks like John Wayne when her bum gets sore!

Thanks for those ideas ladies- did leave her with her nappy off for a good hour this evening and it def looked better but think a trip to the Dr re thrush is a good idea reallywoundup cheers for that. Its really red raw with funny little spots at the edges and runs literally all the way up from her bottom to her coccix area. Am wondering if it could be thrush afterall. Poor little sausage I do feel awful when I'm cleaning off the poo and its obviously sore Does anyone have an opinion re normal wipes or washable wipes?

For mega-soreness (as with our recent teeth), I tend to go the whole hog & do a waist down swill in the sink. If that's not possible, then cotton wool & water (avoiding all wipes when it's bad).
Then I like drapolene - lashings of it. DD's has cleared up nicely, but Lordy it made my knees go funny when it was v.bad

No wipes when rash is bad, id use washable ones or cotton wool and water, make sure bottom is totally dry. Plenty of time with no nappy as suggested. Also if using washable nappies give all nappies a strip wash and extra rinse, maybe a build up with soap powder making it worse. Maybe also worth trying a silver nappy liner over night as silver heals nappy rash, def check for thrush if none of this works. Good luck x

Breast milk is brilliant ( a tip got from someone on here) - I used to put it on my ds's nappy rash, his was awful when he was teething. Magic stuff. But that's not much use if you're not bf.

Just to quickly let you know that the description of the rash sounds like thrush- the little white spots are a tell tale sign! Hth

We keep the nappy rash at bay by using fleece liners, bathing DD's bottom with chamomile tea (soothing) using cotton wool pads and with liberal applications of Bepanthol.

White-ish spots and rash in the creases are classic symptoms of thrush, incidentally.

Your poor LO! Hope it clears up soon.

For a teething rash that isn't thrush, I used to use a cream called Vasogen which contains calamine, soothed the stinging very quickly. I think you can still get it from some independent chemists and smaller chains. I used to apply it at each change during a teething phase to deal with the effects of caustic wee and poo.

when ds had a bad rash with teething i used, fleece cloths with water for wipes or a face cloth as it was easier to get the poo off! then used a fleece wrap day and night and changed him every 2 hours and used burts bees nappy cream. he didn't seem to cry with it either like he did with the metanium. it was much more washing for a few days changing every 2 hours but worth it.
