best time of year to have a baby?

We're currently considering maybe just maybe trying for a third baby and I was wondering if anyone has any advice re best months to aim for (I know it doesn't always work out as planned anyway!) Was thinking about next spring/summer as dh can be around more then but would have ds and dd on holiday from school/playgroup for some of the time so maybe not such a great idea?

Don't apologise

It's interesting to read of school provisions in other areas - not many schools in this area have "state nurseries" - in fact only 2 locally and both haven't got great reputations.

Our catchment primary school is great - just local secondary schools give me cause for concern!

Sorry, I'll shut up now - have gone way off the thread ::

What about the Scottish school system where February babies are the youngest and March babies are the oldest?
The brightest kids when I was at school were all March/April birthdays -does that equate to Sept/Oct birthdays down south? Or do they all even out by school age?

codswallop, we have the party in August but have to send the invitations out in June as they finish school at the end of June. Having now organised this years party I think what I'll do next year is wait until they are all back at school and then have the party a week or two after they've started back.
My daughter started the nursery at her school when she was 3, then did a year of Pre-school there and then started school in the August when she was 5. Her birthday is a week before the term starts so she was 5 when she started school although a few of them were 4 and some nearer to 6. They have all got on really well though and finish tomorrow for the holidays, I can't believe that primary one has gone so fast.

Here Here Wills!
Bloody weather, it's doing my head in and I'm praying for rain.

Rain - would rather a freak snow storm!

Hi,

I have had two Feb babes - one's five, the other's six months old

I think this was a great time to have them as, generally, the weather is just starting to get better and better and there is the summer to look forward to. I don't think I could have faced having a Sept/Oct baby. Surely the onset of winter only makes the possibility of PND greater?

Northerner · 21/08/2003 13:36

Cas1968, I agree about the PND thing. My 2 friends who sufferred from PND had babies in October and December. I had my ds in April, so I had light mornings and evenings and warm weather to look forward to and I still felt really down at times. I think I would have felt worse had it been winter/dark and cold etc.

I had ds end of August last year and no 2 is due mid Feb 2004 so I will experience the two sides of the spectrum. Have to admit, as last summer wasn't too hot, I didn't suffer too much on the tube travelling to work although I would have hated to be heavily pg this August!!!
Will wait with interest to see what its like having no 2 in Feb - will at least mean I have a summer maternity leave which will be nice. Flipside of that is that I have to return to work in the autumn which might be a bit depressing. Having my leave over winter last time was nice because I didn't have to get up for work on any of those grim winter mornings....and by the time I went back to work in March, the clocks were almost ready to go forward again.
I think there are pros and cons to both but will give you an update this time next year (all being well) if I remember and let you know my verdict for what its worth!

One big advantage of an autumn/winter baby is that things get very messy with solids and if you're weaning in spring/summer there's less laundry - or even none at all if (like me) you're into nude feeding in the garden!

overthehill · 03/09/2003 23:30

I had my first in December; she was a bit jaundiced and the midwife recommended sunlight - not easy due to the prevailing freezing fog! And it's awkward later on when you have to organise birthday parties - hard to book venue/entertainers/children(!) because of competing Christmas attractions - and child gets all presents at once then has to wait a whole year (also never tend to get given spring/summer clothes or outdoor toys). Plus the fact that maternity leave is during the winter so you can't relax as much, and you do worry more about baby being too cold (or too hot) at night.

My son was born in April, which was much better for all the reasons mentioned above; also our primary school has two intakes so he'll be 4.75 years when he starts, just like his sister was.

I also suffer from poor circulation so being pregnant in the winter was good for me as I had toasty-warm feet for about the first time ever - I always feel so sorry for people huffing and puffing through hot summers like this one!

In the end, a lot of it's down to chance and you cope one way or another _ i was just delighted & amazed to have managed it at all!

i dont know what to say you have your good and bad points with any time of the year but i have a 15 month and it's great as he's walking around and can really enjoy the summer, unlike my other son that had to wait till he was 21 months old to really enjoy th summer months.

bluecow · 16/09/2003 12:36

Nine months after you conceive?!
I had ds is October and d?2 due in April.
Don't bank on baby arriving just when you want it though, unless you know you'll fall pregnant soon after trying.
Like overthehill, just thrilled to have one kid and another on way at my age!!
