Toddlers and fussy eating

Looking for a bit of advice about how to deal with this. DD is 20 months. She has a reasonably varied diet, loves fruit and will happily eat oat cakes or rice cakes and cream cheese, yoghurt, vegetables, and nearly always eats a good breakfast. However, when we put lunch and dinner in front of her she will sometimes have a pick at it, but often refuse it all together.

Our current strategy is-keep offering meals, try to eat together as much as possible, no stress or pressure if the food isn't eaten. No replacement foods offered (except a small pudding after evening meal)and snacks between meals kept to a minimum (and then only 'healthy' ones). I'm also trying to make sure that there is something she likes on each plate of food e.g. if I'm offering a casserole and not sure she'll like it, I'll do some veg with it.

Does this sound about right or is there something extra or something different that I should be doing? Has anyone else been there and had their DC grow out of it?

Your approach sounds very good to me... yes they outgrow it, eventually!!

Yes you're doing really well. Its not unusual to loose your rag with them when there not eating what you want them to. So carry on remaining calm. My DH is much better at getting my DS to eat. etc He chats to him about his day and we sometimes have to do the spoon/fork for him. Between 15mths and 20mths he went through a phase of living of bread, pasta, and potatoes and beans. We had to do a bit o cajolling and bribing but he's now eating a really good balanced diet (he's 2.10yrs) He'd never liked roasted meat of any kind and now he eats it all. And he's regularly eating broccoli and carrots and peas which is major for us!

Thanks for both your replies.

bumbums, it's really encouraging to hear that it doesn't last forever! Will keep at it and keep my fingers crossed.
